Genius Windows 8 Touch Mouse Hands-On: Perform Gestures from Afar

When it launches, Windows 8 will enable a whole new world of multitouch gestures for touchpads, but what if you want to perform those gestures without touching the screen, touching your touchpad or touching your notebook at all? A new wireless mouse from peripheral-maker Genius allows you to perform Windows 8 gestures while standing several feet away from your notebook and holding it in the air.

Shoot! I thought of this kind of idea while writing in a thread about touch a few weeks ago. I added it to a list of personal ideas/inventions. Oh well!! Telle est la vie!! The only course for me now is to improve it.

Two handed mouse
EPIC FAIL :roflmao:
As some may know here, I hate the mouse. It's a close cousin to the rat! I'm more of a shortcut key user. And for quite some time. While some are saying M$ is forcing us to go touch, I think it's the way to go, although, I'll admit, a touch monitor at a PC may be cumbersome and some may not desire to use it at all. Personally I sit at my PC with the screen just shy of an arm's length.

This contraption is a funny, if one needs to hold it in two hands. That doesn't make sense at all....now I have two busy hands instead of one! But, I believe they're on the right track. (Pun intended) I'm sure they'll improve the response.

All in all, I wouldn't buy one.

BTW: If evolution were true, wouldn't we have three hands? It always seems we need another one!!

Don't Microsoft have a hardware division, making mice and keyboards, microphones, headsets and and webcams? Shouldn't they be first here with the tablet mouse:

I already have Microsoft's Touch Mouse that they released for Windows 7 and it's quite a nice thing to work with. You can easily snap windows, go back and forth, hyperscroll, and minimize all windows or open a window viewer to choose one all with just using touch. It's pretty neat, I hope some new Windows 8 drivers make it work better with 8.

But as for that mouse....

That only reinforces my expectation that all the bad Amazon.com reviews are the accurate ones:

I'm glad I bought 3 units of the Bluetrack Explorer mice for $20 each after Microsoft discontinued them. It looks like Microsoft hasn't made a decent mouse in a couple of years.

You can easily snap windows, go back and forth, hyperscroll, and minimize all windows or open a window viewer to choose one all with just using touch.

It reportedly sucks at doing mouse stuff like right-clicking and scrolling and going back, and the gestures are at best flaky.

I don't know, I read the poor reviews and I haven't experienced those issues. I have though had it left click when I try to right click a few times, but that was a long time ago when I initially started using it. It's a different mouse that is just a bit different to use. But the criticisms of the touch gesturing is absurd to me, then again, I haven't had ANY issue with touch. Scrolling is smooth to me. I like it because I can easily hyperscroll through a huge list, and then scroll in to focus on a certain part of a list. The forward/back swipes work perfectly. Only issue I've seen is on IE9/10 from time to time where it doesn't register the swipe back, again, it happens from time to time and not often for me.

The only thing I have against it is gaming. It simply can't do it well, the hyperscroll kills you and since there aren't two separate buttons, it makes sniping difficult. Again, I knew what I was getting myself into and I bought it for 50 dollars when it was first released on the amazon and I use it for every thing other than gaming. It was definitely worth it!

Keyboard short cuts are definitely more efficient for navigating if you're good at them. Sometimes though, as in web browsing, there isn't time to tab through every HL. Track ball on keyboard would be nice :/

I use keyboard shortcuts and the mouse. KB shortcuts are cool. Mice are cool.

Trackballs, however, are not. Never were. Never will be.

I can't imagine a more useless way of interfacing with the confuser (well, actually I can, it's called 'touch').

As what I have experience right now I'm getting use to it. With their dry run of "Release Preview" this is an advantage as I can say for now and for us users that follows what's up to date release. Without this release preview when that release comes I might say that we are searching in the dark for the previous OS of what we have been using for a decade and now MS will turn everything into a different face of Windows.
