Windows Live Mail 2012 requires an update to keep using it

The Microsoft Essentials pack, consisting of Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Live Writer (which is now available as an open source project) and Live Mail, has been in a state of limbo for quite a while now. The latest major update for the pack dates back to 2012 and still uses the Live branding that Microsoft abandoned in the same year.

All of these apps are still available for download, but one of these apps, Live Mail, will soon stop working without the installation of a new required update.

Because of underlying updates on the Microsoft mail platforms (Outlook/Hotmail), Live Mail will lose the ability to receive emails. However, since the application still has quite a few users, Microsoft has provided an update that will prolong the life of the mail application and allow it to receive mails once again.

Microsoft does recommend that any users of the Live Mail application switch over to the new Mail application that has been built-in to Windows 8 and Windows 10. These applications are still actively being developed, so it might be a smart choice to move over, since the support for Live Mail will probably end soon.

This free update is now available here and is dubbed "Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012" (KB 3093594).

Here's the word (courtesy of Ron Sommer MVP):

Login to your outlook.com account using a browser. Does it say Outlook.com or Outlook Mail (Preview)?

KB3093594 should only be installed if you have an outlook.com account that has been upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview).

If you have more than one outlook.com account, you will have to decide if you want the accounts that have not been upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview) to work or do you want the accounts that have been upgraded to work.

No Outlook Mail (Preview) accounts - do not install KB3093594.

An account has upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview) - install KB3093594.

    Brink,
    I need clarification.
My WLM 2012 has a pop account configured ( Bell.net)
Will I still get emails in and out using WLM and Bell.net WITHOUT downloading the update ?

I've checked my 2 outlook.com accounts, they are still named Outlook.com. But I don't care if WLM cannot send/receive Hotmail emails.
All I care about is whether I can still use WLM for my Bell.net account.

    Thank you.

I set up a PC for a gentleman some years ago, and the only working email program on it was Windows Live Mail.
So I set it up, wading through all the setup difficulties, till it was as done as I could make it.

My customer responded "That looks like sh**!". I had to agree with him, but at that time I didn't know what else I could so.

Well, time passed and I finally figgered out how to get Windows Mail to work on Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and even 10.

Windows Mail is what I call "Outlook Express, on Steroids".

I just go into 'Program files' and take ownership of the entire Windows Mail folder. Then I open the folder and delete all the files in it. I carry the entire folder of files from Windows Vista, in a folder on my Utilities Flash Drive, and I just copy and paste them into the now empty Windows Mail folder on the PC. I right click on the "WinMail.exe" file and 'Send to desktop and create a shortcut'.

Now I can just click the shortcut on the desktop and set up Windows mail just like I would Outlook Express. In less than five minutes I can have Windows Mail pulling in email.
If GMail is the email provider, I will have to go log into GMail and set it to Pop ON and Imac OFF, for Windows Mail to be able to get the email. There are a few more settings in Windows Mail, that fortunately I have memorized.

But the bottom line is, that for those who used Outlook Express for as many years as I did, Windows Mail is the perfect replacement.

    Happy Holidays, Mates

    Hello David,

Since they are still named Outlook.com for you, you do not want to install the update.

You should be able to continue as normal.

    Bewildered

i got that same message yesterday and i am kinda lost.
i've been using live mail 2012 since outlook express died a few years back.
i have it setup for two comcast accounts and three hotmail accounts.
one click and i see everything.
if my speakers are on i even get a ding notification for mail.

when my old windows 7 computer died over a year ago i got a new one with win 8 and upgraded to 8.1 when it came out.
i found and dl'd LM2012 and found a decent comcast tech guy who i let remote controll and set up LM.
    everything works fine.
i use something called classic shell to make 8.1 look and work like old windows, start button,,controll panel, etc because...well, that's what i know
so when i got that msg i did dl and install whatever it was to keep Lm working, but also started looking around to see if i could setup outlook like LM,where all my accounts are easily accessable, but i couldn't find a way.
so i came here and saw this topic.
to see if i have outlook already setup i banged the cursor on the right until the windows 8 screen came up,hit the mail icon and boom,i'm in outlook,i think, set up with my oldest hotmail account, the one i use to log in to microsoft, and there are over a thousand emails in there, going back over a year.
not just the ones i've already read via LM,but hundreds from domains or individuals that i've blocked in the last year +
it took me a half hour just to manually delete everything.
and this is just my one of 3 hotmail accounts.
my question is: is there something out there that will let me do this?
is it possible to set up outlook to get mail from all my accounts?
    thanks in advance
ps,to make it more difficult, all my account passwords are set on auto and i can't remember what they are

Don't install the update. It will screw up WLM. I had to uninstall and reinstall WLM to fix mine.
