Windows Phone 8 Announced: It's Windows 8, On a Phone

Windows 8 will be much more tightly tied to Windows Phone 8 than Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 were, something Sullivan called "bidirectional sharing." They'll share the same kernel, the same file system, and the same basic interface metaphor, Microsoft's new array of sliding tiles which it calls "Metro."

This is going to be amazing! Mobile gaming on Windows Phone is going to blow up ios' or android's capability. Hardware manufacturers can make the phones faster. And best of all, apps work on both platform with little change to code!

  1. So... Windows Phone 8 is basically a subversion of Windows 8 RT?

That's what I bet it is. Microsoft spoke about how a metro app from Windows 8 can be easily ported to Windows Phone.

Relax my friend, hardware manufacturers is facing a huge wall with phone ; heat and power consummation, you can't use the same Laptop's CPU and Battery size in a phone. For a wild Phones games will stay phones games, something my kids play at restaurant waiting for their orders.

Ummm, they're not going to be using Intel chips for a phone. They're going to be using Qualcomm processors and possibly Nvidia's Tegra chipset.

Hi there
Only your kids !!! You mean you let them use a phone in a Restaurant when they are out with you.

I'm guilty as charged on this one playing a game BUT ONLY IF I AM BY MYSELEF.

I can't be bothered with Facebook or making inane TWATS on TWITTER but playing "Classic Spider solitaire" is quite fun while waiting for your dinner.

Although I'm not usually in a restaurant by myself -- if I have to eat alone then I usually go to a nice bar if one is available -- but if I'm with people why on earth would I want to pull out a phone and play games -- even old fashioned "Manners" would rule that out -- but I don't suppose in todays society anybody cares about that sort of stuff. I know if mobile phones had been around when I was young and I was using one in a restaurant if I was with other people such as parents -- well I leave to your imagination what my parents would have said and done.

However to get back to the point -- Windows 8 in some form could EASILY run on some of todays smart phones -- I think for example the current processor on the Galaxy IIIs is a quad processor probably with more compute power than even a decent laptop.

The main limitation for a lot of "Traditional" windows applications is the size of the screen -- for example there's a great Free Android application called KIngsoft Office which can handle pretty well all your MS office documents --including EXCEL Macros etc -- but it isn't much fun doing anything with this application apart from viewing documents although you can update and edit them too -- and the Galaxy III s has roughly the same size screen as the Iphone -- anything smaller --forget it.

Battery life and heat (although the phone does get quite warm when running a few apps concurrently such as music playing plus web surfing plus office) seem to be acceptable -- on the original HTC phones battery life was really short if you used the phone for anything more than making and receiving calls -- the Galaxy Battery life is actually very acceptable.

Cheers

LOL

Microsoft apparently found the OEM landscape for Windows 8 tablets so bleak that it had to build its own.

I bring my kids quite often with me at restaurant, My first one born when I was 42, I get married for the first and only time at that age too. I don't play with my phone, actually I'm thinking to replace it for a plain Nokia. I repair computer since 1980, so I'm not freak enough any more to check my email and text with my phone, if someone want to communicate with me, he just have to phone me, lol.

Hi there
well said !!!

I don't to facebook / twitter etc etc either.

I used to be a "Smart phone Sceptic" but I travel a lot and it really makes booking /getting info etc etc a breeze

The Galaxy IIIs was the first smartphone that I could even BEGIN to start using -- everything else I just gave up on except a friends Iphone -- but I wasn't buying an Iphone.

The latest Samsung works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and IMO is even easier than the Iphone (must be if dummies like me can use it) and even with the size fingers I've got I can still type on it (although it's NOT going to replace the small Netbook I also travel with - I've more or less given up on Standard Laptops when travelling --if you've got a decent phone and a comfortable netbook that's more than enough and light too).

Cheers
