    Yes and NO
YES:-MS have got it absolutely right from a pure business point of view i.e. increase the revenue stream, provide a constant ongoing revenue, even after installation; stay in business.
The future sales to Joe public will revolve around tablets and smartphones at my guess for 90% of sales.
Corporate and developers will continue with desktops for the hard work but will also issue tablets for mobile computing. Joe public will use the cloud and spend $$$ on apps; MS cannot afford not to be in this market.
If they are not successful they would not be able to develop future op systems; where would we be now if they had not moved on from Windows 3.

NO:- Desktop users with multiple applications, open multiple screens want to continue with what they have already to avoid a new learning curve. Any body care to guess at the total worldwide man-hours involved in getting to grips with the new system?. Corporates already have a "cloud" it is their own servers think vpn. You are in charge of your own destiny.
Even forgetting about the privacy issue of uploading sensitive date to MS what happens should have a "cloud" outage and lose all your data. They will stick with Win7 and maybe migrate from XP or W2000 if they have not done so as yet.

The relatively simple solution is to enable win8 (setup option) to boot direct to the desktop and restore some of options:- start menu, shutdown restart buttons etc., addressing the majority of complaints around.

I guess I would use W8 if not to expensive and not have to pay additional money for standard items from 7 they have removed. Use the "cloud" NEVER. Use windows live mail leaving all emails on a microsoft server NEVER. I have only cocked up once since windows 3 by failing to restore my system ie data and programs when a transformer at the end of my street blew up bigtime taking out 3 computers at once when my backup systems were live. Since the advent of low cost external drives I am hopefully imune to that as a keep a copy at my sons house.

What we really want is a service pack upgrade to W7 that incorporates the underlying code that makes W8 faster in desktop mode, it is really good.

Highly tuned super-cars use different systems to the standard family saloon why should PCs be any different.

Technically, the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation could sue apple for product infringement since the PADD in Star Trek had its name ripped off for the ipad. The i part came from apple since they like to ruin centuries of English grammatical rule, the pad part had to have come from PADD....

And I would bet that the PADD would be successful in that case since Samsung even used that as reference in their own patent dispute with apple.

    Yes.

So why are they risking so much by angering their existing user base?

They are trying to get a hold in the tablet market - that is difficult enough - it is quite incredible the way they have behaved towards their customers.

    Some have suggested panic .

Hard to think of any other reason.

It's simple, change. Something new and something fresh to keep developing the Windows platform on. If it didn't happen now, it would had happened.

That doesn't answer the question - no surprise there.

If they allowed choice - they would do well., no question of that.

The deliberate removal of choice is appalling.

    Very dangerous, counterproductive.

It must be a fascinating time over at Apple HQ. They must be sorely tempted to attack.

Risky for them - they would need to bring in a laptop range at lower prices. Even with a different branding strategy, there is a danger it could contaminate their premium brand.

But what an opportunity to seize the desktop os market as well.

I'm all for change if its a positive thing but Windows 8, or more specifically Metro, doesn't strike me as a positive change. Not if you're going to make it the de facto standard across all computing devices. There are a few that like it but it would seem that a fair amount more don't like it. Especially on a none touch device. Obviously to you that "does not compute". IMHO, its going to be a very long time, if ever, before everybody moves to owning just a tablet, slate, or laptop and abandons the desktop PC.

apple stands NO chance to seize that market since they've failed at that time after time. Even then, Windows 7 is still there for use until 2022. For some, that will be fine, for others, Windows 8 will be fine.

Reading all four pages thread, and all other similar threads, I am just wishing some MS guys have their glance to all threads that require their attention. I don't certainly wish they take it all, but at least your discussion would worth something to MS in making their final touch to Win 8.
I am not convenience with metro app, but I work with win 8 every single day since the first release, installed on my second PC in the office and home, exploring how it affects my day-to-day living with PC. This just to make sure I'm not in position of judging without sufficient reasoning. And I come to a thought that metro still need to be something better in the next release.

So far pretty much all of the Metro apps I've tried are really terrible, clunky and amateurish. Granted, I have only tried a handful (only FREE apps) but the ones I've tried are pretty bad. Take, for instance, the Mail app that comes with Win 8. It doesn't allow any form of customization that...
Solved My Windows Key doesn't work in General Support
I had been using the Windows key to switch back and forth from Metro to desktop. When I am in Metro, pressing it does nothing, but it works everywhere else. I simply click on the desktop icon, so it's no big deal, but is there a solution?
