On desktop it REALLY SUCKS, I have it installed in a VBox machine and am forcing myself to toy around with it at least 2 or 3 hours a week. It IS awful. The interface I mean, it sucks,

^ I virtualize everything. I found that the experience with Metro and Windows 8 in a virtualized environment made it even more awful.

Once I installed on a physical machine things were much better. The corners and such work much better.

Most detractors, myself included, state that win8, METRO sucks mightily on the desktop. And it straight out does, and nothing will change that. I'll go one step further, I think metro apps suck too.

Metro apps on a desktop are just strange. I don't see the value at all. Why dedicated 100% of my entire screen to a music application. I would expect 90% of my work under Windows 8 on a desktop/laptop to be done under the desktop.

Brink, I like the way you introduce a subject! Great article! Good writer. Nailed it! Not complicated!

Sci-fi predicts it, Gates tries to introduce it and fails, Jobs trendies it and succeeds, Ballmer tries to market it again!

Discovering the secret to well-designed products
Apple certainly led the way in bringing well-designed, easy-to-use products to the market, and now others are beginning to get a clue. It's actually not that complicated. Hire reputable industrial designers, then listen to them. And then test the resulting products extensively and fix whatever annoys people. This same process has been applied to cars, kitchen appliances, and other consumer categories at companies run by MBAs, not Steve Jobs.
M$ is in the business of marketing software. They foresee the trend of touch. OEMs aren't doing the job on hardware, so they will introduce the Surface along with Win 8. I predict it will be a smash hit.

I'm old enough to remember opening cans with a hand-held human-powered can opener. Then we purchased an electric one. I remember pinning diapers as a sitter and dunking them into a toilet to 1st rinse them for the wash. Then they came out with disposables. I raised my kids with them. I HATE the mouse! I'm getting a touch device. I hope you get my jest....

I, myself, am very much liking 8. If one doesn't like 8, stick with 7. I think the author's correct about 9.

In closing, the only thing constant in the universe is change.

That is the bit MS left out.

    It could cost them dear.

Microsoft didn't even start their tablet obsession with xp, they started it back way yonder around Windows 3 with an edition called Windows 3 for Pen Computing! The main reason I suspect that people claim that Microsoft stole apple's idea is because there simple aren't Windows Tablet PCs out in consumer existence. The thing different now is that Microsoft is emphasizing touch and mobility like never before. Windows 7 was built for both, but didn't have a touchier interface. Windows 8 does and is being considered a serious threat to the ipad like no other and has pretty much ended android.

Great graphic! I hadn't seen that one yet! I had heard that Samsung defended an intellectual property suit in the EU brought by apple (who claimed they had patented a thin touch screen device that you tap, etc). Samsung pointed out the PADD in TNG and called it prior art. Just beautiful! LOL.

So far pretty much all of the Metro apps I've tried are really terrible, clunky and amateurish. Granted, I have only tried a handful (only FREE apps) but the ones I've tried are pretty bad. Take, for instance, the Mail app that comes with Win 8. It doesn't allow any form of customization that...
Solved My Windows Key doesn't work in General Support
I had been using the Windows key to switch back and forth from Metro to desktop. When I am in Metro, pressing it does nothing, but it works everywhere else. I simply click on the desktop icon, so it's no big deal, but is there a solution?
