All Microsoft has to do is deliver these things at a reasonable price and good build quality, and they will be a hit.

Go to any forum and find out how popular these things will be, even lots of people with iPads are willing to dump them if MS can deliver. I don't even know why I bothered to read that fools post,"it's just another tablet", he's one of the only people who thinks that. Most Tech bloggers are in the Apple camp and can't see anything else, if Microsoft fails it will be mainly because of them and they're biased garbage.
This is true, even the initial reviews of the ipad were that the name was a monthly feminine device and it seemed cool, but had no place in an already tech filled lives.

That turned out to be true...

I can't seem to find much in the way of specs for the Microsoft mag keyboard, but from the pictures, it looks like its too thin to have it's own power source. I put this down as a plus because, who wants to charge their tablet cover? Having to charge your tablet cover sounds like a bad thing to me. It doesn't have any cables dangling off either, and I don't see how it can be Bluetooth without it's own power source, so my best guess for how it connects would be to say that it must connect similarly to the way the magnetic charger works on the mac book pro? That would be made possible by hardware on the Surface that, to my knowledge, the Ipad doesn't have.

If anyone has the specs for it, we could put this past debate. Anyone?

I can only speak for myself as to convertible laptops -- I use mine professionally as well as for home use, and can only say that I wouldn't give up my keyboard or my touch screen for a sack full of kittens. Personally, I probably wouldn't buy the Surface either, but I can't get past thinking how much more beautiful its keyboard is than any competing product available for the ipad.
I watched the whole keynote address of the Surface and they detailed about the touch cover keyboard. It's not a Bluetooth device or anything like that. It seems to have a connector like the digital pen, it's magnetic and seems to just power the keyboard, much like plugging in a USB keyboard to your puter, just that it isn't a USB port.

The tablet though is subtly gorgeous. The touch cover comes in different colors, and when you click on a different colored on, the Start Screen actually changes to that color automatically. Pretty neat!

Honestly, Microsoft has had branded hardware for a LONG time, as long as Windows 1 with the mouse. The Surface is like their first mouse, but you can't sell a touch screen by itself. They just completed the package. They already have mice, keyboards, webcams, Kinect sensors, Xboxes, PixelSense tabletop puter, the original Surface puter, and now a tablet computer.

It kind of makes me wonder though. A few years ago, there were sightings of a black laptop with Windows branding on the lid. Nothing ever surfaced up from what that was, but it was real. I wonder if Microsoft has been plotting a branded puter for longer than the Surface tablet.

I love the idea of changing your color scheme just by flicking a new cover on! Maybe most users won't accessorize their Surface, but I wouldn't put it beyond a doubt given the popularity of buying new cases to accessorize the iphone. I can't wait to find out what they're going to cost.

I'm using Keyboard Mouse and have a Logitech Wireless Touchpad which works great with Windows 8 I just have it next to my mouse on my desk. It isn't intrusive itís small enough to be used with your mouse and you can do most movements as shown in Windows 8. Although, latest SetPoint software doesn't include pinch but, I have been advised on good authority this will be in the latest SetPoint drivers which will be available sometime in 2012, hopefully before the launch of Windows 8.

I want to ask you, you feel that Windows 8 is closing down the OS like apple has it. I kind of see your point a bit, but could you extrapolate on that some?

I kind of want to know your stance on this to understand it better....

    Yeah, I'm asking you.

I guess I probably have skimmed what I'm looking for, but I don't remember your feelings about it being locked down.

I have an iPad and a Dell latitude in my tolls kit that I bring with me for service call, I use way more the iPad than my laptop. At home I like to use it in the kitchen to get recipes, I use it also to show stuff on the web to friends. I even control my reef tank with it, ( light, pH, salinity, water change, and a lot of other thing) In my train room , I get more and more function control by the iPad , Iphone or Android one everyday, Is that not high tech enough for you ?

You have to face it; Ipad tablets have their places, and the place get so much places that Microsoft is aliening all the desktop users to adopt a stupid tablet OS. I think if someone is not able to lean an OS for is Desktop and PC and a different or modify one for his tablet and phone, well this person is probably not so tech after all.

You didn't ask me but I'll answer.

The entire handling of the metro apps issue. They will ONLY be available through the app store. Hows that for locking things down? Also the free dev tools now ONLY create Metro apps. More lock down. No more going to a web site or a store and buying a piece of software and installing it. You have to submit your software to MS for approval and then THEY get a cut of your profits. Forced middleman. It's highway robbery actually.

That and all the tie ins with the Microsoft cloud. The entire OS is geared towards getting you into Microsoft services. They pay lip service to being interoperable with other social sites but everything is all about the MS services on shipment. It'll remain to be seen if they "don't approve" of competing service apps in the app store like Apple does, but it's a dangerous possibility.

The entire thrust of this OS is to attach you to and put you through all of Microsoft's on line and continuous revenue generating systems.

Now of course for now one can avoid it... for now... but the entire thing is a scary and dangerous precedent for the future of windows. We can all SEE the models they are so desperately trying to emulate and most of us HATE those models which is why we are Microsoft users in the first place...
