Move from Windows 8 to 8.1 NOW!!!

Windows 8 users face patch spigot shutoff in 7 months

Windows 8 users have a little less than seven months to move to Windows 8.1 or be cut off from Microsoft's stream of security updates.
Windows 8 users face patch spigot shutoff in 7 months - Techworld

8. Why are you requiring Windows 8 customers move to Windows 8.1 two years after the General Availability?

Historically, we’ve had a similar support approach related to Windows service packs; when a Windows service pack is released, Microsoft provides customers 24 months of support for the prior service pack or original RTM version. Unlike service packs that are typically just a collection of fixes, Windows 8.1 has new features and enhancements. We designed Windows 8.1 to give customers an ability to deploy this update in a manner that is similar to how customers deploy service packs, therefore we are applying the existing service pack support policy to Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 does not change any hardware requirements compared with Windows 8 or Windows 7 and existing Windows Store apps will work with Windows 8.1. The update has little to no impact on existing desktop apps and there is no direct software cost because business customers with Software Assurance licensing will receive Windows 8.1 as a free update. For organizations running legacy applications that need to be upgraded, there are tools to manage deployment in order to help mitigate cost and impact.

I really can't fault them. Having two versions of 8 out there is a bit dumb. Honestly don't understand why some 8 users refuse to upgrade to 8.1, it is better and more stable IMO.

Some can't due to not meeting all the requirements. Certain CPU's don't have all the required features for 8.1. Some have tried and the update fails, or they have issues after upgrading and roll back to 8.0. Some are just scared its going to crash their PC. etc.

Moving from 8 to 8.1 was a nightmare, which I still have not forgotten, probably never will.
After many unsuccessful attempts, I have got an "illegal" 8.1 ISO and I did a clean install. :zip:

Yes, I have got myself a clean ISO from Microsoft, but I still have to use an "illegal" key to install, then I have to activate it with an original 8 key. It is Microsoft's fault, that people have problems without 8.1 ISO.

Yes, I have got myself a clean ISO from Microsoft, but I still have to use an "illegal" key to install, then I have to activate it with an original 8 key. It is Microsoft's fault, that people have problems, 8.1 iso is restricted.

The install media from the link I posted will use 8.0 and 8.1 keys, even OEM embedded keys. I verified it myself. I'm still using my TechNet 8.0 Pro keys with that media.

The older download wouldn't let you install with 8.0 keys. There were generic 8.1 install keys you could use though, and then activate with your 8.0 key. You had to have a key do the download too, and OEM keys were rejected. The Media Creation Tool doesn't ask for a key to do the download. And accepts 8.0 and 8.1 keys for install and activation. This is the install media you want. Nice and clean and safe, right from Microsoft.

yup did the exact same thing, but my problem was the 2nd update to 8.1....

Hope MS WILL release a "full" installable ISO for 10 this time, and IF the 8.1 retail key won't work , send new 10 keys that will.

If you have a working legal OS I don't see why your installed key should not work. :)

If it would ask for a key it would be good to have it handy.

OK, look, what we, (me and this other guy) meant was we HAVE a RETAIL key, but in his case he couldn't get 8.1 to update his 8, and in my case I couldn't get 8.1 to do the update .1 or what ever it referred to as, so WE both had to go find an ISO to use as a "clean" installer. OKy, so since i don't have some MS "account" and I assume he didn't either, we got hold of a (in my case a torrent) ISO of 8.1. which btw isn't really "illegal" its just a TP anyway, cause it was only installable using some "public" install key, cause our "retail" w8 key wouldn't install the thing, ONLY after installing using the "public" install key could we use our "retail" key to "activate" the now limited by time, w8.1 install.

So we HAD our keys on hand, they just wouldn't work as a install key on this public installer. That's why I said MS should have put a good ISO out at that time so we that have a "retail" w8 key could install the thing. And its what I mean about this W10 upgrade, Give me a "retail" ISO and I'm sure my "retail" W8 key should work too. and since its a "free" upgrade for us, than send us a new W10 "retail" key to replace the "retail" W8 key I/we now have. (with the ISO) and were done......

Ironically, I have never even used the installer since the first time anyway, once my system is up and running, and all updates done, I always make a new Image anyway, I use 3 different imaging programs for that, as backups to backup, and when ever I need to "recover" I just use the USB boot stick and recover the image (from MS file history imaging), The other backups are just that "other backups" in case. I've found the built in imaging program works real good, and have confidence in it now after having used it. The main reason for the full installer is if I got another computer and wanted to install a clean copy to start off with of 10 with the "retail" key.

Many Windows 8 users simply won't upgrade to Windows 8.1 simply because they are not aware that this is any sort of issue at all. Many of them bought their machines with 8 preinstalled and are forced to deal with it, combine that with the fact that they are not technical and don't know how to upgrade, they may not have good connection speed to upgrade and perhaps simply oblivious that an upgrade option even exists because all they care is to get their thing done with their computers.

yup did the exact same thing, but my problem was the 2nd update to 8.1....

Hope MS WILL release a "full" installable ISO for 10 this time, and IF the 8.1 retail key won't work , send new 10 keys that will.

I tried the 10 TP & my 8.1 key was accepted & automatically activated since I used a Microsoft account.
How the 6/29 10 will act remains to be seen.
If you have a working legal OS I don't see why your installed key should not work. :)

If it would ask for a key it would be good to have it handy.

This vbs script will show your keys---

HOODY, I suggest you patiently read this whole article:

How to Perform a Clean Install of Windows 8.1 With a Windows 8 Key

Something in there says that you have to modify your ei.cfg file inside your Windows 8.1 ISO so that it allows you to use a Windows 8 license key for Windows 8.1.

yeah, good info, but thing is I have no use for this now, already been there done that, if you patiently read what i posted, you'll see the same stuff that was written on the upper paragraph of that article. the part I didn't do was the to edit that file,. I got it all done my way back than, and later got 8.1 ESD D/L by using some trick that was posted, by stopping the D/l and restarting it from MS. I'm good to go here, its NOT me that was complaining about not being able to update W8 to 8.1, that was the guy I responded to, all I said was the update to 8.1 was my problem. I don't have any problem now, just waiting to see how this W10 pans pans out, so thanks for the concern,, its all good

I am yet to try the method of editing the ei.cfg file. I want some client to hand me a laptop with Windows 8 as the preinstalled OS, I'd revert it to factory settings and if Windows 8 becomes usable, I'd try to extract its legal license key, backup the drivers and do a clean install of Windows 8.1 using a modified ISO with the method shown on that article and provide the Windows 8 license key that I extracted earlier.

You don't need a modified ISO by the way. This install media, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help , doesn't require a key to download and will use Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys for install and activation. Even OEM embedded keys. If I install 8.1 from that link it uses my laptops OEM embedded key for Windows 8.0 automatically. I'm not prompted to enter a key and it activates online automatically with no issues. The latest MSDN ISO's will also accept Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys, and use OEM embedded keys automatically. You don't really even need to know what your OEM key is. All you need to know is what version the key is for, Core, Pro, or Single Language, etc.

Kerry,
I think I've seen similar postings, from you, about keys, here and in Ten Forums, and some people are just not quite understanding. You and Craig should get together and create a thorough tutorial on the subject of activation keys(maybe even a video in Ten Forums:)).
Then all we would have to do is link people to the tut.
