    Windows 8

According to Whitepaper released by Microsoft, Your CPU should support PAE/NX/SSE2 in order to install Windows 8 on the system. You can use Coreinfo tool to check whether it supports or not.

Solution to this would be upgrading BIOS and enable NX from BIOS settings.

Yes, we've read that on the MS Website a few times now, but if my CPU doesn't support NX then it's a 100% "NO SALE" for Win 8.....byeeeee!!

    Clean Install - Windows 8
The only installation problem I ran into was trying to get the RP not the CP however but the RP to go onto a VM with the latest VM Player. No problem with VirtualBox however while the install to the second drive here after two weeks started seeing freezes!

On the first day of the two debacle the explorer windows and some other things started locking forcing a hard boot after having been booted in 8 for several hours. The next time I went to boot only the Start screen and settings, apps side bar would work except for the Refresh PC option pointing out missing files that soon?

After a refresh you will need to install all programs and drivers from scratch while your personal files are packed away in the Windows.old folder if you elect that option. Otherwise a complete wipe. As for installing 8 by optical or flash drive the find here is that it takes about the same time as XP and Vista when compared to how fast 7 typically installs.

I lost all my drivers in both CP and RP. Installation of my network adapter driver broke horribly in RP. It shows up in device manager and says it's fine, but it doesn't work -- sounds like the audio driver mentioned earlier in this thread.

Try the Network troubleshooter found in the Control Panel>Network & Sharing Center.

Once you lose the connection you may have to shut it all down and unplug the ac adapter for the dsl or cable modem plus any router.

From there replug the modem back in ahd wait a minute or so for it to resync with the ISP before doing anything else. If you have a router added on you then plug that back in and allow it to pose as the pc to re-establish the Mac and private IP addresses.

Basically you are refreshing the connection by using this method. Once those two tasks are tended to you power up the system and wait to see if the network icon if made visible sees the red X change to green. If it doesn't once Windows finishes loading up go into the N&S section and use the troubleshooting tool.

Note there's a little advanced link you click and will see the "apply fix. Once the connection is re-established you will see the same network settings screen appear that you see when going to install a fresh copy of Windows. You start off by clicking the connect to a network option once you are in the N&S Center to arrive at the screen above and then see the selection screen for Home, Work, or Publc.

You'll likely want the network icon set to show in the system notification area first however to watch. Generally this works with the first attempt as long as you wait a few extra seconds inbetween each step.

Tried the troubleshooter -- it couldn't detect the network adapter, although it was visible in the device manager.

I ended up getting a tiny little USB network adapter and its faster than the built in one that isn't working so I guess the failure to install properly turned out to be a net gain

Here I simply added in a Netgear GA311 pci type ethernet card when changing ISPs back in 2009 rather then using the onboard WLan jack and did get bumped offline a few times but restored quickly following the steps there. The old dsl adapter was usb that didn't even see XP x64 support let alone Vista x64 or 7 x64!

Even with the new cable ISP the outdated modem they provided had to go as well! Lately they dumped the usb only for a dual modem with both usb and RJ-45 making life easier except only one RJ-45 ethernet jack instead of being able to plug the desktop in the modem directly it's back to the router time.

Despite having a driver software disk I've never had to use it for any OS including 8 since the detection and install of the driver is automatic. Nic cards are generally faster then usb to start with and found to be more reliable if eventually you ever need to replace the new one you have now. You can find those cheap as low as $15 when shopping around or simply grab one at a Walmart or office supply store for a bit more however. Try $24-$30 at a retail outlet.

That doesn't help any! Your options are limited for sure!

Here I ended up with 8 on VBox since changing one bios setting worked for 7 with ease but trashed the RP install on the second drive making it unbootable. Originally with the CP the version of VM Player wouldn't allow that release to connect until the next verison came out correcting a glitch. The RP simply refused to install on it however and seems to go on VBox without issue.

Since the RP install was pooched I tossed another OS project on and the other OS happens to have a different VBox where the first 8 screen appears but... "that's all folks!"? So much for the screen capture there as well it seems showing 8 on the Linux VBox.

Lol, "pooched" sounds like a good description of that whole situation. What a hassle
