How to remove the 'Get Windows 10' app from your PC

PCs that Microsoft determines cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, Microsoft will enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PCs compatibility if you choose.

The Get Windows 10 (GWX) app helps you understand your Windows 10 upgrade options and device readiness, and gives you the opportunity to get a free copy of Windows 10.

    Hit send accidently...

OK, so I ran the reg fix some weeks ago and all has been good, no nags for W10 etc but out of curiosity I just looked at the reg key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate that I thought the reg file had previously created and I find the key isn't now present. There is no 'Windows Update' showing in that location.

    Hello Mooly,

It's a policy setting that doesn't get added until set.

Thanks for the info Shawn. Group Policy isn't available to me on my version of 8.1

Still slightly puzzled (although all is fine operationally) in that I can't see the reg key that I understand would have been created by the 'reg file fix', there is just nothing there. Would you expect to see it ? I ran the file at the time and it did what it was supposed to do.

Edit... I think I've answered my own question as I see a GWX key is present and showing as DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

    So all good

If you ran the disable .reg file from step 3 in the tutorial below from an administrator account, it should have added the DisableOSUpgrade DWORD in the WindowsUpdate key below.

Ah... now the reg file I ran was this one to remove the get W10 icon from the tray,

So the one in this tutorial is different ? Would you advise now running the reg file in this thread ? All updates are correctly installed and non are hidden and at this point in time I don't want W10 on this PC (not least because its not been able to run it). All I see in the registry is this and nothing W10 related has ever appeared in WU since running your original file way back in June.

If you have the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update in Windows Update and don't want to see it anymore, then you'll need to use the tutorial below instead to disable it.

No, I don't have the 'Upgrade to 10' update showing. Perhaps this PC's reluctance to correctly run W10 has stopped the update being deemed compatible anyway for the moment.

OK... so interesting as ever but I think I'll leave things as they are. If it aint broke and all that. Thanks for clarifying the situation though.
