I think I'll wait until just be before the first free year upgrade ends to update, this way most if not all drivers will be mature and bug free by and possibly a Windows 10 service pack might come out fixing bugs and any compatibility problems with the initial release of the OS.

Coming from Windows 8.1 I don't think I'll missing out on a who lot in terms of the learning curve for Windows 10 but I still might install Windows 10 on a spare hard drive just for a test run and to see all the new goodies the OS has to offer.

I've been using 10 on my old laptop since October(actually used it before I bought my Win8.1 desktop) the only thing it doesn't have, that 8 has and I really like is the all apps screen. But in 10 forums we have found away to make a pseudo apps screen in file explorer using a couple of different methods. I don't really need it but it's still nice to know I can have one if I want.

You really should give 10 a shot before deciding. And come over to 10 forums too. Kari has set up on you tube(can be accessed at 10 forums) a section on Tutorial Videos created by Forum members, They are really professional.

The information is still leaving my brain confused. Can I perform an immediate clean install and retain my machine's license, or do I have to upgrade first and THEN clean install? Questions questions questions
That I'm not sure about? I would think you'll have to accept the offer of the free upgrade to get a key and or the install media. Whether you have to actually do the upgrade the first time or you can bail out and clean install I don't know. There just isn't enough info out there for me to say at this point. All I can really say is, if you have to reinstall Windows 10 after doing the free upgrade, you will be able to do a clean install and skip having to install the original OS and then upgrading again.

EDIT: I'm a member of all three forums 7, 8 and 10 forums with the same username.

That is the big question around now, doing a clean install from upgrade, like when free 8.1 upgrade or update whatever want to call it came out, will it be possible as before. Of course needing media from an ISO of 10.

Man, that was a lot to read, simple question unless i missed it in all that reading. If i use or get the ISO of Win10 upgrade i can do a clean install of just Win10, but what key do i use to activate ? I have a retail copy of Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit on system now and already reserved my upgrade.

I don't know? Not enough info posted by Microsoft to answer that question? I think they will issue you a new Windows 10 key as part of the free upgrade process. You would then use that key to do your clean install. Just my educated guess though. I do not believe it will be restricted like an "upgrade" version you would buy online etc.

Make sense, thanks bud. My educated guess to before asking, sure need another key can not use Windows 8.1 key.
I remember this so clearly as it was yesterday asking this with Windows 8.1 update then or even upgrade to windows 8, eventually bought Pro version of 8.1.

    W8.1up1 Pro x64 w/media center

I bought the advanced order key when W8 Pro was offered via pre order, when W8.1 came out I couldn't get it to D/L from that store update thing, I ended up getting a W8.1 pro ISO from a torrent site, burned that to a setup/install disk, ran the installer having to use some install key as the retail W8 pro key wouldn't do the install, but after the thing was installed, all I had to do was enter my retail W8 key in and it activated as normal.

So if MS doesn't put out a ISO, you can burn an ISO from the ESD folder that will be added for the D/L of 10 and than use that to burn a W10 setup disk, now the only question would be if you had to do the same type of install process as I did with 8 tp 8.1 having to use some install key, and than hope that the retail key you bought will activate that copy, OR they make it so ANY retail key would work to do the initial install. If not, than yeah they sure would need to issue everybody with a retail 8 or 8.1 key a new w10 key, weather via email, or just automatically adding one to the installed program via web connection that you could than copy and save to use for future "clean" installs.

In my case, once I get the thing upgraded, I start right off making my usual Image backups anyway, and never have a need for any clean installs, since I have a crap load of personal programs I have no intention of re installing all over again. I use 3 different imaging programs now, you never know if one wouldn't work, learned my lesson years ago after spending 36hrs one weekend re building my HD after a bad mistake with one of those backups going bad and I only had that one at the time.

    Windows 8.1 w/ Pro Pack

Will 8.1 Pro Pack key unlock Win 10 Pro?

I just purchased a new computer last month. It came with 8.1 Core pre-installed w/ embedded key. I'm planning on purchasing the 8.1 Pro Pack. I saw in the Windows 10 Q&A that 8.1 Core will get Windows 10 Home & 8.1 Pro will get Win 10 Pro. I assume the version you get with the free upgrade will be based on the key. So if the upgrade uses the embedded 8.1 Core key, will I still be able to get Win 10 Pro using the 8.1 Pro Pack?

I just figured out that if I wanted to do a clean install of 8.1 Pro using the Pro Pack, I need to clean install Core first, then unlock Pro with the Pro Pack key. Has anyone seen information confirming that a 8.1 Pro Pack key will unlock Windows 10 Pro?

Or should I wait to upgrade to Pro and hope they offer a Win 10 Pro Pack?
