I am unsure what I am reading here, this 'media installation' software - what exactly does it do? For times sake I am currently creating this on a stick, but only to use if it is something I can use in the future, saving me searching files at some future date. Also I already have a recovery stick made up.
It downloads all the files needed to install Windows 8.1 Then creates either an ISO of a bootable thumb drive. You can then install Windows 8.1 with that Media. That media will read and use Windows 8.0 keys and 8.1 keys, even OEM embedded keys. Providing you install the correct version. My laptop came with Windows 8.0. If I install 8.1 it reads my embedded key automatically and activates online automatically. I don't have to enter a product code. If I install 8.1 Pro on my laptop I get prompted to enter a key, The embedded key is only good for 8.0/8.1 (Core).

Your welcome. It's a big step up from the old download that made you enter a key to get it, and made you use an 8.1 key to install it.

Yeah, I guess you're right. If it ends up being possible though, lots of respect for Microsoft

Understandably so, i'll be lurking around this thread until you can finally share with us the information. Windows 10 is turning out to be something truly amazing!

Have a look at this, The Free Windows 10 Will Support Unlimited Clean Installs - Windows 10 Forums It's some of the info I saw on Yammer but wasn't allowed to repeat. Looks like clean installs will be doable.

I guess I will have a really complicated time upgrading... The last time I tried to upgrade my windows 8 to windows 8.1. I was not able to download anything from the internet.... As I tried to reformat my computer and reinstall windows it did not let me. I had to use one of the Sony Vaiogate apps to do this. Nevertheless I spent 2 days rebuilding my computer. In the end I managed it but I turned off all upgrades (because if I upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1. it sees my home wifi router, it connects to the internet, but the browser does not see it and I am unable to use the internet.). My computer has been running without any kind of upgrades (except for the anti-virus software) for about a year now. How can I then upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 if my computer is not able to get connected to the internet again after the first upgrade? Can I get a windows 10 installation DVD if I send Microsoft my windows 8 registration number? Do you have any kind of solution to this problem? Thank you.

Can't help you with the Windows 10 part of your question, I don't know the answers to those questions. As far as upgrading to Windows 8.1. If you go here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help you can get Windows 8.1 install media that will read and use Windows 8.0 keys and 8.1 keys, even OEM embedded keys. You just have to download and install the matching version to what was originally installed on your PC. You could clean install Windows 8.1 with this media and skip having to upgrade form 8.0 to 8.1.

Follow the instructions from alphanumeric to install Windows 8.1 on your computer. You cannot get the free Windows 10 if you are still running Windows 8, only with Windows 8.1 installed.
Also not a good idea to turn off Windows Updates as you need those updates for the security of your system. An internet connection is a must.

Thank you for the link, already made an account

The information is still leaving my brain confused. Can I perform an immediate clean install and retain my machine's license, or do I have to upgrade first and THEN clean install? Questions questions questions
