The notification popup is tied to this update - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583. The upgrade compatibility check, download and installation are also managed by this update so check that you did not opt out of this back in March when it was issued as an 'optional' update and hid it from future notification. With an email address they will confirm your reservation
Cheers for the info. Yeah, except Silverlight and Skype Desktop, all Windows updates are installed and up-to-date.

However, back then when GWX installed itself through Windows Update it was prevented from making outbound connections due to firewall whitelisting. I whitelisted it a few days later, when I had time to investigate what it was exactly, but maybe the initial blocking is linked to why it hasn't appeared today.

I'm way too busy to look into it at the moment, so I'll have a play when I get some time. I've got a couple of months anyway...

PS. I re-read the bit about the email address and you're correct it seems that's if you want confirmation of reservation.

Nope. Ran all the optional updates too to make sure I was all up-to-date and still nothing. I'll check again after work.

Judging by the fact that emails go out in batches, it may take a few days to get them out to everyone MS has registered. To send them all out in one would certainly hit the internet hard.

Yes there is a windows icon in the task bar on mine .................

this is what happens when you click it

I don't know if this is an appropriate question here, but I'll ask it nonetheless:

If I am to upgrade my Windows 8.1 Pro computer to Windows 10, will it upgrade only to Windows 10, or is there a Windows 10 Pro version that it will upgrade to? I've tried doing research to no avail, so perhaps somebody here can help me. Basically, is there any difference between the versions of Windows 10 that a Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro will upgrade to?

For the people not seeing the icon: Did you uninstall/hide update kb3022345 DiagTracking or turn the service off?

Windows 10 is a free upgrade, there's no reason to 'reserve' it. It's not as if there are going to be a limited number of copies and you might miss out.

I think they're just trying to get lots of people to upgrade as soon as they can to create a base of users. Even having run the preview builds in a VM I think I'd like to see the release settle down for a couple of months before I change my main OS.

I have my answer now, thank you. So that's good to hear. Also, will it be possible to get the Windows 8 start menu (you know, the one with all of the metro apps that takes up the whole screen that nobody besides me likes) on Windows 10? Or does it have to be the old-style Start Menu? Basically, is there a choice? I've been unable to find that information as well.
