but mainly there is absolutely no need to pirate an Operating System. A version comes with all non-Apple PC's and if one wants safer then Arch or Debian or BSD or Open Suse...etc.
You can buy a laptop with either "Ubuntu" or "FreeDOS" in my country. Those laptops costs around 2000 INR less than those came with "Windows" pre-installed. Usually those who buy Ubuntu laptops will wipe it and install pirated versions of Windows instead.

Sorry I had to laugh. I have been using Ubuntu for years too, and I find it runs great. I use my laptop for it which only has a B960 Intel processor and the graphic are great, better than when I boot to Windows 7 with it, I can even use the "Desktop Cube". The only reason to "need" Windows is gaming, but I like using and trying different OS's and have my favorites. Still it's simply easier to buy a Windows PC(at least in Germany.

The way I read it is, genuine = free upgrade, non genuine = possible discount. A non genuine system can upgrade to Windows 10 but it won't be activated/licensed, they won't get a free ride. They are going to have to pay for Windows 10. The question is, will it be full price or a limited time offer discount. That's my interpretation.

That's the problem on the net, Microsoft will publish/say something, but not go into depth or take questions(probably not quite sure themselves and need to work it out with their accountants first, and then their business lawyers), and then some blogger or IT magazine "interprets" it(sometimes even adding to it).

I agree, they say just enough to make you wonder what they're actually saying.

they could do a deal like when 8 was on the way, I got the pro key (that works on 8.1 if I use a installer copy on a clean machineI, only paid 15 bucks and they threw in the media key as well. I used it to update my W7 HP laptop and its been doin OK since 8 came out. So they might could do some kind of deal for those that have an unlicensed copy while giving the rest a free copy. I mean hell if I had an illegal copy and got a chance to make it good for 15 bucks why not..

I would imagine, there will be a (pay for) upgrade version and full version for those with XP or Vista or built it them selves PC's.

They would probably need to factory reset to the original software then upgrade from there.
