Hits and misses in Windows 8 so far

A pretty good list.

Guess I'm flexible when it comes to an OS, must be due to being forced (corporate policy) to wait 1-2 years after an OS release to be able to use it.
Granted, several things aren't the way I want them to be, just glad it's not my job to try and make ~1.7B computer users happy.

It's probably going to be another "App" from another one of those "dreaded APP stores". (Whyt can't people use the PROPER NAME -- Application) instead of even trying to SPEAK "Text-ese- - bad enough looking at people posting in "Text-ese" without having to LISTEN to it as well.

Why on earth to install anything do we have to go the HORRIBLE route of say "ITunes" or "Google shop".

I'm on my 29th Google account and STILL haven't been able to install a SINGLE APP on a smart phone (trying to get SKY GO).

every time I try and connect I get either Username or password invalid -- yet I can SIGN IN to ANY of these accounts !!!!!!!

PLEASE PLEASE MS don't go down this or a similar route.

Cheers

Yes, all the games are now in the app store and they are all metro apps too! No more little windows mine sweeper or sudoku or even spider solitaire that you could play in a window and keep an eye on a long downlod progress. NOPE! All apps must be completely full screen now! No more (visual) multitasking allowed!

It si teh futar! (Apparently) :(

Hi there
good excuse for keeping a small XP or Linux VM system to play those games while the download is progressing.

I don't like the whole idea at all of those app stores and with huge monitors on a desktop I often like to have several Windows open -- especially if I'm on the WEB or doing spreadsheets etc.

With say an Iphone or a Galaxy smart phone it makes sense to have full screen mode -- screen "real estate" is much smaller of course.

incidentally the XP version of spider solitaire can run "Stand alone" as spider.exe if you can find an old XP install disk. This works fine on W8 !!.

The other stuff doesn't though. I tried installing as per W7 looking at the .cab files etc but couldn't hack it enough to get the games to work.

I managed to do it on W2003 server but that trick doesn't work on W8. Some people have got W7 games to work apparently on W8 server but I think even W8 server is different quite considerably to W8 release preview.

Cheers

Yeah, even at home I have 4-6 open windows at a time on dual monitors that I'm keeping an eye on and at work it's more like 8-15 (Including an ubuntu VM with another half dozen running there) all carefully layed out. Metro has zero place in that kind of work environment, and on my home desktop where I'm also actually /doing/ things, not there either.

I almost feel like they are bullying me into Metro in order to farm an ecosystem for future tablets and an Apple like revenue stream. I said it before but if MS becomes Apple, we'll have lost something really great. That OS that sat directly between Apples "Our way o the highway" universe and the Linux "Do whatever you want but you /will/ have to do it all yourself" mentalities.

Windows has JUST enough walling to present a consitant development platform that promosts a thriving ecosystem and just enough freedom for everyone to take advantage of it without the OS vendor (and OS itself) getting in the way at every turn.

We don't need another Apple, one is PLENTY! :(

Hi there
Windows 95 and 98 are still around too !!.
I'm sure W7 won't go away any time soon -- XP will still also be around probably till at least 2020 in one form or another.

The idea of single full screen SINGLE windows only (Metro) will KILL this version of the OS as far as businesses are concerned - forget about Windows R8 Enterprise. Most Working Home users as well will not want only metro style apps on their PC either. Fine if you just want to watch videos or casually surf the web but for any serious desktop stuff you need multi - Windows.

Anyway isn't the OS called WINDOWS (Plural) not WINDOW (singular) which is what it wil become if its metro only for the desktop.

While you can only open one metro app, it doesn't mean you can't multitask. If you have more than one monitor that is. I can play a game in Metro and have the desktop versions of Outlook and IE running on my second monitor no problem. Don't get me wrong, the one Metro app at a time is lame in this day and age. I'm just saying I could monitor my bit torrent download or similar and still play a game in Metro. I shouldn't have to, but I can.

Multiple Monitor support could still use enhancements.

It's nice that the added the hot corners on multiple monitors but they should still be able to function independently of each other.

You should be able to open metro on both monitors at the same time. Right now if you have an app open on the second monitor and open another app on the first the second monitor will show the desktop.

And if you have an app running on the second monitor and pull up the start screen on it and then click on monitor 1. the app will return on monitor 2

And several things in metro still pause like photo slideshow for example if you try to run it on a second monitor and then focus back on the first.
