  1. #161

I had the same sloow running installation - try:-

    VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

which allows you to drag the screen to any old resolution and fixes the slow speed & non-working apps.

    Hi,

I installed the Preview release from within the CP version using the RP udgrade assistant. As this is a multi-disk multi-boot system I can see several folders that seem out of tune with a regular build when a drive letter is assigned to the W8 install from within another OS.

These are the typical "Windows.old" (15+ Gb) , unknown $WINDOWS.~BT" (hidden, 5.71 Gb ) and a folder called "ESD" (hidden and read only, 2.62 Gb ).
While it's easy to guess what the first one is, the others seem to both contain setup folders.
I suppose one of them is the download that was used during install but the other one is a bit of question mark to me.

    Anyone?

    Cheers,

I'm not using W8, so forgive me if I'm off base. But I'm assuming W8 still has the cleanmgr.exe? Would the cleanmgr /sageset:99 command enable the option that may clean these? Temporary windows installation files perhaps? ESD is apparently where the downloaded windows setup files are stored. $WINDOWS.~BT is also a temporary install folder. In Vista, it was a file created when an upgrade failed ( Log files that are created when you upgrade to Windows Vista from an earlier version of Windows )

Try downloading the iso image directly. Often 3rd party downloaders are nothing but a problem to begin with.

I did download it with IDM without problem from This Official Site also.

My Problem is, I was able to install it to my old office dual-core desktop, but not to my ASUS K42F (Core i3). The JMicron LAN driver from MS seemed installed correctly in device manager in the network connection marked as unplugged though I changed the cable many times (work well with other machines). Tried to install the latest JMicron native driver but failed.

Weird. As WCP worked pretty well with it. Now I just have WCP back to my ASUS.

The two methods most commonly used once you have a success installing any adapter drive is the Network & Sharing Center troubleshooter and powering everything down before unplugging the modem used for about a half minute. That of course depends on the type of modem as well as how it plugged into by usb or ethernet. With the Lan that would be the RJ-45 type cable.

Once you have unplugged the dsl or cable modem for the half minute or so and plug that back if not having an on/off switch on it you watch as that resyncs with the ISP and then power up the system and allow the fresh detection of both the WLan and should see the prompt for selection of Home, Work, and Public to select the Home option for the network setting.

With a NetGear nic card here I never even bothered installing any driver since both 7 and 8 even the other OS will automatically install a generic driver and configure the established connection tight away. The only problem connecting with 8 was seen on VM Player when one release was problematic soon to be followed by another release a few months with the bugs fixed.

Unfortunately VM Player now needs an even newer release for the RP to get it installed there.

For the first time ever, I'm actually not even going to bother downloading the RP. I've always been keen to try out every new windows version and see what's on offer, even Vista, but I'm so extremely disappointed with this version of Windows, I'm not even going to try it anymore.. Totally because of the lack of desktop support/metro interface and the way applications are run.

I know... I'm a sad excuse for a human being... Perhaps I'm getting old and the "tinkerer" side of me is fading into oblivion. *sigh*

    Touch screen *shudder* lol.

You're okay, Tanya. Windows 7 works fine, and if you think MS is having a hard time killing off XP, wait until they try to get rid of 7. If you don't like Windows 8, that's fine. Windows 7 will do everything you need.
