8 Ways Microsoft Will Tweak Windows 8

For the past few months, Microsoft has observed while techies dug into the Windows 8 “Consumer Preview“–in geek parlance, the beta. The result is several big changes to the operating system, many of which will appear in the near-final Windows 8 “Release Preview,” due out in June.

For those who haven’t been keeping a close eye on Windows 8′s development, here’s a rundown of how Microsoft will tweak Windows 8 before launch

I tried the DP, and the CP.

The CP (32-bit) is running on my other laptop, the 64-bit version has been and gone from this one.

I'm not even going to bother with the RC at this stage.

And won't be touching the retail version. Well, maybe after SP2, when/if they realise and correct
what they've done (hopefully).

No Start button or menu, no Aero, the GHASTLY Metro idea, no Media Centre, no DVD playback, this
insidious 'cloud' they want to force me into, secure-boot, and all the rest may have been acceptable if
there was a choice.

But, nooooooo...M$ know better than me what I want and what I do? I doubt that.

As I've said earlier, that's a shame, because there's a great little OS hidden in there

Long live Windows 7, which will probably go down in history as Microsoft's finest effort.

They should have put the (few, IMO) improvements (Task Manager, file-copy, etc) into a Service
Pack for Win 7 and left it at that.

(And I've used them all, since Win 3.0.)

Open wide for the latest dose of what we know is good for you. Sounds llke the fruit company ( we will take a small bite from your fruit) that way you can see it is not poisoned. But you do have to take like we say is best and what you want has nothing to do with anything.

The new policies and products from Microsoft seem to be paterned after the marketing patern found in Apple. I have justified staying with Microsoft for these many years because of that difference. Now it is gone so stay with Windows 7 is the best choice for now but not sure how to deal with what is happening in the cloud but sure do not like it so far.

So much big chunky stuff to eat at one time is a bit much.

Everything you say here is TRUTH!

Tens of millions maybe hundreds of millions will just say "NO" to Windows 8 if it FORCES the customer to use Metro UI as default. Nice post kat!

The thing is just because something is "new" does not automatically make it "better".

The future, well touch screens simply cannot and will likely never match the efficiency of the old keyboard and mouse from what we can see today. This again is for the desktop and productivity environment. For playing around on your smart phone or tablet maybe so.

Bottom line MS is trying to put a round peg in a square hole, and it just doesn't make sense.

Nice article. Give a good read on where MS is going. One interesting quote:

While a few of these visual changes are hinted at in the upcoming Release Preview, most of them will not yet be publicly available. You’ll see them all in the final release of Windows 8!

It has been assumed by many that the Release Preview would be the same as the Final release, but just looks like another "Beta". Give us a another look at what is coming and still hope for more improvements.

Say... I wonder how all the users who save files on their desktops will work with Metro's huge tiles. Haven't used 8 personally, mind you, just seen the screenshots (those tiles look awfully large). These people barely understand folders (and the folder concept has been around Windows since forever), so anything with a file dialog box automatically gets pointed to their desktop "so I don't lose the file".

The support tickets are going to be interesting reading.

An aborted and emasculated 'desktop' is available.

The Start Screen is NOT the Start menu, and never will be.

And it has LESS options. And as for the 'New Look'...it SUXORS!

Goodbye, Windows.

At first, I was really looking forward to Win 8. Loved the DP.

BUT........

Since the CP came out, and the more I learn about M$'s motives, and
what's likely to (dis)appear in the retail build, I'm actually becoming quite
HOSTILE towards Win 8.

Windows ME and Windows Vista (both wrongly regarded as 'bad' OSes) were
BOTH better than this bloody 'dog's breakfast'.

Windows 7, or Ubuntu Linux. But NEVER this abortion of an OS.

I'd sooner go back to DOS (which I do still run, on DOS-Box, and on one of my
older machines with Windows for Workgroups 3.11).

Windows 8 without the bullshyt (Metro, the cloud, secure-boot, the removal of

And it IS, under the bonnet.

As it stands, though, and as it seems to be headed, I won't touch it.

Sorry....not.

And I've been using Windows since version 3.0, so I'm NOT a clueless newbie.

Kat? You can configure Win8 CP with a Start button, and it is quite easy. Brink has let us know about a program called ViStart, just download it, run it and THEN add the executable to your startup folder under program menu (It will have a program menu once you start the program ViStart). Then the next time you login your start button, and all the information that you are use to seeing will be there, and WHAT'S cool is, if you move your mouse to the immediate left of the newly found start button, you have the metro "Start" right there, and can click on it instead of the start button. Thank you Brink, GREAT find.

You know Kat, maybe that's your problem, you've gotten used to doing things a certain way and just aren't willing to bend. Try to think of the future, the future is completely different to the past. The future is touch and mobile and tablets and also this is a faster better version of Windows, just with a different twist.

Got an Android phone, and have absolutely NO interest in tablets.

AT ALL!

I'm a 'desktop man' through and through, and have been for a quarter of a century or more.

And THAT will not change.

It's not a matter of 'learning something new'.

I CAN use Win 8. With ease.

I simply don't LIKE it.

It's 'improvements' should be Win7 SP2.

As for the rest of it....no, thanks.

I'm not trolling, either, that's simply the way I feel.

I really did want to like 8 (the DP was OK, liked it), but am severely disillusioned....

As things are, I wouldn't even bother pirating it. I certainly won't be BUYING it.

BTW, by my tests, 8 is no faster than 7, except on boot-up, which, to me, is irrelevant.

Kat, I was a desktop man through and through as well, got an Android phone, liked that, bought an Android tablet, thought not too bad, then got an iPad. I can absolutely guarantee that tablets are the future for casual computing. When Windows 8 comes out on tablets I'm sure business will embrace its use as well.
I know I'm only one of the few on here that like Windows 8, but I'm sure it will be a hit once a few little problems are ironed out. I must admit I can't see your problems with the desktop, to me it's not much different to Windows 7.

Done that, Mike, I'm using StartMenu 7 and the Quick-launch toolbar.

It's not a BAD OS, I simply dislike the way it's been implemented.

It's NOT a matter of 'can't use' more a matter of simply don't like.

And I was one of the few who stood up for Vista when it came out
and got bagged (I beta-tested Vista, and loved it, the OS itself was
never the issue, it was always hardware and support), but this one
leaves me cold.

Sorry, but that's the way it is.

BTW, I was running my Win 8 machine last night, and turned Aero off to
get an idea what Win 8 would look like without Aero.

Windows 3.11 looks better.
