Windows 8 Metro apps freshen up for Release Preview

Microsoft is tweaking its core Metro apps for the upcoming Windows 8 Release Preview.

Already showing up in the newest internal builds of Windows 8, the updated apps offer new features, changes to the user interface, and the removal of the "app preview" title, says The Verge. Included in the revamp are the Windows 8 Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging app; the Photos App, the Music app, and the Microsoft Reader.

Some of the updates are floating about internally at Microsoft but are not available for the Windows 8 beta, aka Consumer Preview. Instead, Microsoft will unveil them all as part of the Windows 8 Release Preview.

But Windows Store preview pages of certain revised apps are now popping up online.

That is good news. Maybe now they are useable. Up to now I did not really care about those apps and used the more traditional applications.

    Hi there
Actually I can't see the point of Metro apps on a traditional PC.

Apart from having to scroll leftwards further than the Olympic Marathon (approx. 42 KM) you have to work in FULL screen mode only.

Now this is totally a no-no if you have a large monitor or even more than one monitor.
Even with a decent laptop screen (15 ins or so) this could also be a no-no - when you guys aren't thumbing away on smart phone screens don't you ever have say multiple email pages / web pages / application documents (EXCEL/Word/Power-point etc) open at the same time on the rare occasions when you aren't using the phone but actually working on a "proper" computer..

I like W8 - but Metro on a laptop --c'mon folks -- please get real.

    Rest my case M'lud.

    Cheers

I hope the Photos app is usable. I couldn't use it at all, it just seemed too, unusable.

If you want a really nice Photo App, use this one which runs on /8. It is really nice and has a LOT of functions: FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter

    Hi there
actually I can't think of a better photo app than the "de facto" standard i.e PHOTOSHOP -- ok not the cheapest but it's probably the best.

The GIMP is also pretty good (and FREE unlike photoshop) and works on both Linux and Windows.

    cheers

Jimbo, you are talking about a higher class of photo programs. Those are either expensive and/or pretty complex to use. I use Gimp since several years and am still fighting with it - especially since the manual seems to be written for photo academics.
