The next generation of Windows: Windows 10

I will accept a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 As long as...........................

I don't have to use a Microsoft account to do so.
I can still use my StartIsBack modification [or Classic Shell] And don't have to see that Metro interface.
I can run my present programmes.

What do you mean, we will pay by subscription for everything else?
Office 365, Cloud Storage as a couple of examples plus whatever else is down the line that they can make a buck on. It should be noted that other software companies are jumping on the band wagon subscription route, Malwarebytes or Acronis True Image paid versions as an example. There will be others.
Adobe Photoshop CC is also subscription based.

It's not so much the direct costs that MS is concerned about, it's the user base and the "telemetry" it gleans .... information is big bucks (ask Google) - I don't think they will sell your personal info ( like email for spam etc) but from a consumerism point of view - make use of your user-base - Cortana is a prime example of collecting info cloud-wise.

I found this statement in the following link...
"The important thing to note here is that Windows 10 is not a free upgrade for the first year. It’s a free upgrade for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users within the first year of its launch.

The Windows 10 operating system is expected to be launched in late 2015. At the end of the free one-year window, users who wish to continue using Windows 10 have to pay for a subscription." Scroll down below the blue Windows box at this link Free upgrade of Windows 10 creates uproar in the market - Yahoo Finance I'm guessing they are wrong in saying it's a pay subscription after the 1st year ?

Yes you are wrong. You misunderstood the difference between "Free for the first year" and "Free for the lifetime of the device if you upgrade within a year after launch".

I can understand that. Semantically they are similar if you shuffle some words around. And leave f ew out.
