The next generation of Windows: Windows 10

So, we basically have to pay for everything to run Windows 10. I thought the new Windows uses Skydrive for free. I'm not getting this whole thing.

When I mentioned Cloud Storage I did not mean Microsoft.
You do not have to pay for everything, for now. But the way it is looking for the future it probably will be from Microsoft and 3rd party software, hopefully not.

So what I am saying is that In the future, there will be no choice, so anyone wanting the 'traditional' software will have to go subscription. If your up to it, look at this thread:Software subscriptions: progressive or premature?

You were complaining earlier about 8.1 running out in 2023. Let me give you my understanding (I may well be wrong on some details)

    • If you want Windows 10 and your hardware can support it it is free if you already have some version of Windows.
    • If you want internet you have to pay (someone) for it. I do.
    • If you use windows and have a MS account you will get (currently but it keeps changing for me) 50GB of space free with OneDrive (used to be called SkyDrive).
    • If you have already bought an earlier version of Office you can continue to use it.
    • If you want Office 365 you have to pay (perhaps the first year is free). I would personally but I can't justify it at the moment. With that you get unlimited storage.
    • If you want Netfix or something - you have to pay for it. I wouldn't bother but many do.
    • If you want a mobile phone you have to pay (someone else) for it. I would.

Then it gets into other stuff, cars, clothes food and so which you also have to pay for.

It is life - you decide what you want and then do it or don't. I think Windows 10 is great and I like OneDrive. I also run Arch on my MacBook most of the time because I enjoy it when it breaks as it gives me something to look into when I forgot to read the upgrade notes. Keeps my brain ticking over.

Well, excuse me. But, they should offer it as a free upgrade. Otherwise, they will lose more customers. If they want them back, then they need to offer 10 as a free upgrade for 8.1.

I know it is. Microsoft has already announced it. But, people keep arguing with me that it's not or that I should face reality and wish it wasn't free. I do not consider myself a fanboy. The people who are arguing with me on here do.

So you think it "should be free" but you already "know it is".

No arguments with that. You were correct both times

I could be wrong but I think they are saying is that extras like Office will be paid subscriptions. But it's not clear what or if anything other than office will be a subscription service. Until Microsoft outlines things just have to wait and see I guess.

I got myself up at 9:00AM Pacific Standard Time (1:00AM my time ) to watch Microsoft's livestream, but I dozed off around an hour into the thing.

One thing I did see is that Microsoft are going to be offering the upgrades from Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 7 for free for the first year of Windows 10's release. Which means you have to take the plunge within a year of release otherwise you'll be buying the thing. Just wanted to get that out there.
