    Windows 8 gaining market share

With the launch of Windows 8 Consumer Preview on February 29, 2012, millions are already using the latest Microsoft operating system every day. The new operating system is reported to be an elegant re-imagination of Windows, carefully blending the existing mobile and desktop operating system experience. Chitika Insights has been following the progress of the Windows 8 launch dating back to 2011, when usage was significantly below the newly touted levels. Now that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview has had some time to gain a foothold in the market, Chitika Insights has conducted a new research study to determine its current rate of adoption in the U.S and Canada.

If those numbers are only Windows operating systems, then the real news is:
~3x as many people are still using versions of Windows that pre-date XP (compared to W8)!

    Um, guilty....

I have a Pentium 3 with Win98 SE in the spare room just for running
a few older games that won't talk to an OS any later than Win ME and
don't work in compatibility mode. Think early Codies stuff such as the
original TOCA or Colin McRae Rally, for example.

    Reported to be?

    By whom?

Sounds like a press release regurgitated.

Another article on the site is better balanced - although whether Metro is beautiful is a matter of opinion.

I am a little weary of the re-imagination phrase. They added a (add on type of) freakin' program to replace the start menu. lol

    Have you tried DOSBox?

    That's unfair.
Somebody spent a lot of time and money making the add-on as ugly as possible (re-imagining).

It seems like MS couldn't market a nutritious meal to a staving man.
Why didn't they include a full-motion video tile on the Metro screen (in the CP)?
It wouldn't even have had to do anything useful.

Windows is so popular. Pretty soon, this beta is probably going to beat the Mac OSX market share

Yes, I run all my DOS games and Win 3.1/Office 4.5 in DOS-Box.

Never got around to trying Win 95/98/ME there, though.

A project for a (coming) cold winter evening, perhaps?

I do have Win ME in VirtualBox, it's fine for apps but useless for gaming.

I run my old XP era (and earlier) games in a VM (VMware Workstation).
I need DOSBox for some of them.

Although the beta of Windows 7 quickly grabbed one-tenth of 1% of the operating system market share last month, Microsoft Corp.'s OS continued its downward trend, a Web measurement company reported Sunday.

Over the weekend, Windows 7's share peaked at 0.22%.
