Microsoft will surprise in 2015

As the company seeks new ways to grow, it is likely to explore things once unthinkable for it.

You may have noticed that I take a rather cynical view of Microsoft. But I think I am able to recognize when it does good things. As a matter of fact, I think the company made some smart moves in 2014, and it’s going to benefit from them in 2015.

One of those smart moves was to try to move beyond the fiasco that was Windows 8. Yes, Microsoft took its own sweet time in realizing just what a moronic blunder Windows 8.x’s Metro was, but it now is in the process of shoving that awkward interface into the background with Windows 10 (now in beta), bringing back the kind of windows, icon, menu and pointer (WIMP) interface that desktop users prefer.

True, the company needs to do much better in the quality assurance (QA) area. The blunders Microsoft has been making in Windows 10 are sort of understandable (it’s still beta, after all). I still don’t understand, though, how a change to Internet Explorer 11 can foul up an operating system update if, and only if, you have Office installed. No, what I find of much greater concern is an overall pattern of sloppy coding. An Exchange update that knocks out Outlook? Windows 7 patches that block other security patches? If Microsoft doesn’t make QA job number one on the desktop in 2015, Windows 10 may yet prove a flop.

It just may be, however, that Microsoft wouldn’t be that worried if Windows 10 didn’t take off.

Well we always knew this would happen - Nadella being from the Cloud and all..

The Linux twist is obviously directed at corporates and in particular server installations - whether they can offer a cost-effective alternative we'll see...

Exactly, he don't understand, then he should keep his mouth shut and learn to code and get a job at Microsoft. File Explorer, Internet Explorer, Office if one installs it, and all the system security are totally interwoven in windows, and not individual cells like in GNU/Linux.

You know, the only reason I'm stuck with MS ecosystem is b/c of one (just one) .NET app. Soon as I figure out how to duplicate that one functionality on another platform, preferably mobile, I'm saying sayonara to Windows for good!

Too bad it's so hard to create offline apps for Android/Google OS, otherwise I would have left MS long time ago...

You know Windows 8.1 is actually not as bad as people are claiming it to be. I just got a new computer this Christmas after being on a Vista computer since August 2008. Im still getting used to things on my new pc but overall Microsoft at least I think is getting better with each new change and idea.

Well, one of our neighbors just got a new computer with Windows 8. I was trying to help her upgrade to 8.1, but it wouldn't let me. Every time I would go to Microsoft to upgrade to 8.1, it would take me to the Store. Unfortunately, 8.1 upgrade wasn't there. Her husband said he bought it for her for Christmas, because it was on sell. The computer couldn't check for updates or anything. I know Microsoft has discontinued 8. But, why is retail stores still selling 8 computers?

There is a Windows update that enables the upgrade to 8.1 through the Windows Store. Keep doing the Windows update until they are all done and it should become an option in the windows store. My guess is there is still old stock out there that has Windows 8.0 on it. Or, that manufacturer is content with leaving it to the consumer to do the upgrade instead of redoing all it older PC's.

:ditto: To doing a clean install. The install media created with the Media Creation Tool will let you install and activate Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8.0 or 8.1 product code, even embedded OEM codes. Your Dell with have an embedded OEM code for 8.0 in its BIOS. All you need to know is if it's Core or Pro, etc. Just something to think about.
