Windows 8 usage over twice that of Windows 7 beta

In a twitter post, Microsoft stated that

Windows 8 consumer preview usage more than twice Windows 7 beta at the same point in time. Millions of people using everyday

The reason for that would be from counting the downloads! With previous versions like 7 you first had to sign up in order to participate as a beta tester. The 8 D.Preview and later C.Preview was made readily available for anyone!

I think this came about largely after all the 7 leaks a few years back with some not the real deal. Yet everyone was after any 7 build! MS wanted to play it smart this time around by making it far more widely available but upping the security by the new product key verification process as well as requiring the key be entered before any installation would proceed.

As far as anything on a tweet obviously MS wants to draw attention to the next version as one strategy there.

I don't buy it. Sevenforums.com had so much more traffic, visitors and threads at this stage than now here at Eightforums.com.

It can't be because everyone now has become very knowledgeable as a collective whole and everyone now fixes their own Windows problems. I dunno - just saying what I've seen and see.

It could be because leaked builds of Windows 7 were relatively easy to obtain, and therefore when Seven Forums was the same age as Eight Forums is now, more people were already using the new OS and had been for some time. On the other hand, although there have been a few leaks of Windows 8 these have been few and far between when compared to the same stage in development as Windows 7. It is only since the release of the official Betas (although they don't use that term), i.e. Development Preview and Consumer Preview, that this Forum has started to pick up. In addition, both Preview builds were made available to anyone to download from MS's server and they just kept a tally on the number of downloads.

I agree with Night Hawk, taking away the having to be a beta tester restriction opens it up for allot more people to get their hands on it. Its no surprise that download numbers are bigger now that you don't have to hit up a bit torrent site to get it.

Yes, seems you're agreeable with me on this, and that would mean that Microsoft's blog post in the OP is marketing non-sense to persuade the masses with sheep mentality thinking. "Oh everyone is using it so I better start now too! Oh, you mean I could really buy stuff in Metro! Sweet! Clouds are great!"

Oh dear, If MS are posting that kind of drivel - they must be worried.

The forum activity is just a fraction of what it was with win 7 beta versions.

There isn't all that much interest in win8 at this stage.

Windiws 8 is the biggest change since Windows 95, it is making OS history so I am not surprised. I am currently runniung the Consumer Preview and it is a really stable and fast beta. I can understand why there are so many downloads.

Seems like you are missing the point of what we're saying. This website now and sevenforums.com then - the differences between usage is a reliable indicator. Right now, usage is not even close to what sevenforums was. By that alone, we know that Windows 8 usage is not even a small fraction of what Windows 7 beta was.
