    Avast released the patch.

So I've reinstalled Avast and the patch has been applied. Then tried to install this KB300850 twice more today with the same end result it gets to 8% reboots twice, fails with no error message and backs itself out.

Interestingly I've now got 1 x Failed showing as Optional, and 4 x Succeeded showing as Optional plus 2 x Succeeded showing as Important in Update History but nothing at all showing in Installed Updates for it.

I've now come across this thread KB3000850 - BIG update - Windows 8.1.2? - Windows 8 - MSFN Forum which has someone reporting the same symptoms as me so I will keep an eye on that while the search for an answer continues.

Try uninstalling Avast than applying update and after that installing Avast with the patch.

Already been there and done that a couple of days ago and had exactly the same result without Avast being installed (and used Avastclear to make sure it was gone.)

That's why I'm pretty sure something else is causing the problem I have.

No problems with this via windows update on my girlfriend's Toshiba laptop Win 8.1 64bit.

Big issues on my Lenovo laptop Win8.1 64bit. 30+ minutes, gets all the way to the very end then just says FAILED with code 80070002. Stopped WU service, deleted files (DataStore & Download), started WU service, retry and get exact same thing... Stopped, deleted, downloaded from KB article, manual install goes for 30+ minutes all the way to the very end then just says FAILED (no error code).

I give up, reboot my laptop and all my desktop icons, fonts, taskbar is shrunk to very tiny size and clear type is all F'ed up! Go to Display settings and change everything to bigger, hit apply, please wait black screen, comes back but nothing changed and settings are back to tiny (settings didn't stick). Reboot, all still tiny (settings didn't stick). Repeat whole thing, no change, still tiny. Third time tried log off in stead of reboot and it seemed to have stuck.

I had the installation of this update fail using Windows Update. I had several error codes, which I didn't write down. I tried several things to reset the Windows Update history and cleared the downloaded file cache with no luck. I downloaded the update and tried it manually. It too failed. I then looked in the logs and found the same error as lafargeotte: "The system cannot find the file specified." (Command line: ""C:\WINDOWS\system32\wusa.exe"

Some searching brought up the suggestion to open an command prompt as administrator and run "sfc /scannow". I did that, it fixed some errors. I then re-tried to install the update and it worked. Hope this helps someone, it got me past my issues with KB3000850.

    Worked for me too! Thanks.

The sfc scan did bork my WinMail hack, but that was easily corrected.

And looks like this windows update also breaks the WinMail hack, corrected again...

In addition, running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth before running sfc /scannow helps.
    I run them often.
Maybe that is why I had no trouble with the updates.

Also, It took me about 3 hours to download & about 2 hours to install them.

    edit--- I have a download speed of 110 Kbs/second.

Just to update, I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, and sfc /scannow, both as administrator, both found no problems. Just to be sure I also ran sfc /scannow at boot, that also found no problems.
Tried to install the update, still failed!
Attached my CBS log if anyone knows how to look into it.

Try to use ResetBase command as well, I do it regularly and update took 25 minutes on both computers.

Do not forget to run ResetBase afterwards, it bites up nice 2,5GB of space, luckily most of it is restored.
