Applications are programs I run on my computers, for fun and work, both. I laugh these days when I hear descriptions of 5"-6" screen sizes, spoken of in hushed tones of awe and wonder... I laugh because I can still clearly recall my first Amiga monitor purchase in 1987--being a 12" screen which I thought even then was far too small...! 5"-6" sound like a prescription for eye-strain to me and little else……
……Listen, I have nothing but admiration for people still using dumb phones because they're the folks getting the absolute best deals going for cell-phone usage...They're the "smart people", imo. The very best thing a person can do for himself in terms of tech wisdom today is to never get his so-called "smartphone" confused with his personal computer. The similarities are superficial at best, sort of like confusing a walkie-talkie with a megawatt FM broadcasting station...
Laugh, hah? I know I'm treading amongst some dinosaurs, so I must needs be careful. I guess some just haven’t caught up to the 21[SUP]st[/SUP] century.
Excuse me, Walt, but according to your sig you must have not wrote that for you are quite mistaken in every way > And for whomever wrote that obviously never had a smart phone/phablet or used one to be qualified to give such a critique > And no, I won’t “listen” to a bunch of hot air.
Firstly, how big is/was your wrist watch dial? The dials/knobs/digital settings on your kitchen stove? The settings on your microwave oven? Your car radio? The font in books/newspapers/magazines you read? On your monitor at the present? One thing about screen size is that more of font and/or pics are showing > That is all. Of course one can change the font size on just about any modern device's screen > Even a smart phone. And, ah, Walt > You can actually turn a smart phone/phablet sideways for larger text. OMG! Yes! Quite an ingenious idea!
Gotta go!.....
Ok, I'm back. Started this in Word after reading your post on my, ahem, "dumb phone" while waiting for the fiancé during her doctor appointment. Saved it to OneDrive and now back at my PC. Do you understand that technology and can you keep up, Walt?
Where was I at?....Oh yeah, font size.....Holding my 6 inch Lumia up to my tower PC monitor, these shots are approximately 1/2 inch larger of actual size in each direction. Take a ruler and measure your own to get an idea. It's 6 inches diagonally.
Turn it sideways known as landscape:
Then there's pinch zoom in case one needs it:
Larger.....
Are you able to follow, Walt, or am I going too fast?
I saved those screenshots on my phone, connected it to my 8.1 tower, which opens the Windows phone app automatically, and that automatically downloads any recent pics to a folder in my pics folder. If I had Bluetooth on my tower I wouldn’t have to USB it.
Smart phones/phablets are actually mobile computers, Walt. They are no longer just dumb radios. They can:
Go anywhere in a pocket or purse.
Keeps accurate time.
Single or group > type or speak text.
Keep/add/delete entries in the Calendar app which alerts me of appointment or events such as Bdays and anniveraries.
Make single or conference phone calls without or with Bluetooth via earpiece or car radio, especially while driving.
Keep a much more detailed call log of which one can add the number to an existing or make new contact.
Keep a detailed contacts list via Contacts app.
Receive/open/send emails.
Maps and navigation.
Check the current weather, which alerts me of dangerous weather such as T-storms, flash floods, tornado warnings, or snow storms native to our area.
Get other alerts such as amber, news, sports, national bombing attack, etc.
Apps work in conjunction of one another.
Browser to access the Net.
Office suite/OneNote.
Scientific programmable calculator.
Camera and storing photos.
Video cam w/ sound.
Sound recording.
Watch TV/movies/videos.
Play games.
Then there’s Cortana, which what she/it can do would make this list double the size.
Most all of this synchs via services.
Basically, Walt, it can do anything your almighty tower PC can do and more as the list reveals. It can go anywhere > All for $40/mo. That’s not a value? Who’s confused about what?
I could and have, but won't post all this using my “dumb phone”. Copy/paste to forum text box from Word and upload screenshots. Performed it many a time.
You had better not post that you have a 7 to 12 inch tablet, for we’ll be all over you about it. If or when someone gifts you a “dumb phone” you can purchase accessories like this stand fitting for your style as seen below. Happy computing no matter what you use.
