    Pinguy is OK

    It installs fairly quickly.

That dock thing isn't very useful though.
There doesn't seem to be any way to tell exactly what you have open.

I opened 2 LibreOffice Writer windows.
An icon appeared on the dock with 2 lights below it.
I forgot to check if two buttons/icons appeared on the top panel though.

It seems that you can only have 1 dock per side of the screen.

I couldn't figure out how to manipulate the system monitor/sidebar either.
"Conky"? I would never have tried to look for that.

I don't think that any of the "new" Linux distros (I've tried) are as good as Ubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint 11 or CentOS 6.
That said, Pinguy is probably better than W8.

I always had my reservations about those distros that are trying to emulate a part of Windows. When I use Linux, I prefer the real thing. I use vanilla Ubuntu.

    I like Pinguy.

It really is great for a beginner.

Easy to use the few things most people want.

Go on the net - fbook, banking, get your emails.

Does the average user do anything else?

More advanced users might prefer to do it themselves, install their preferred aps. set it up their own way, etc.

I agree, in many ways, it is better than Win8.

It is not trying to emulate Windows - it is just set up ready to use out of the box.

My Dad wouldn't have any difficulty using it. I can't say the same for windows hate.

Cinnamon is not a distribution, it's a fork of the Gnome 3 shell and in my opinion, provides a far better desktop experience that either Gnome 3 or the idiotic Unity.

I'm not as hot about the start menu as I am the removal of unified search. That is totally going backwards

The desktop just isn't right without the start menu. You look at the area where the start menu was and are disappointed that it's gone. How hard would've it been for microsoft to keep the start menu and put a large Back To Metro button?

It would not have been hard.

    It has been deliberately removed.

    Three guesses why.

Hi! I was wondering if the Start button will ever return to Windows 8?
I got a new computer with Windows 8. I put the Classic Shell on. It skips the worthless Metro interface and goes right to the desktop. Some observations. The Aero Glass interface is gone. Some guy has come up with a work around but I am a little jumpy about trying that. The "new look" 8...

Get your start button back in Customization
Get your start button back Well, there is no need to fret about that anymore. Thanks to a heads-up from okorsal, we can show you a simple Registry tweak that will restore the familiar Windows Desktop complete with the Windows 7-style Start Menu. (Thanks also to geek.com for publishing the tweak.)...
I find the new Windows 8 "start" lack the hierarchical organisation. After I installed a view programs the "start" page just become a big pile of mess. I would like to get the start button on the desktop. Is there a way to do it?
