DisplayPort 1.3 details announced

VESA (The Video Electronics Standards Associations) has released details of an update to the DisplayPort standard. DisplayPort 1.3 is an update to the previous 1.2a standard and boosts maximum bandwidth levels to 32.4 Gbits/second, which is set to be fast enough to power upcoming 5K monitors at the insane resolution of 5120 x 2880, just as the public are getting used to 4K ones.

Hi there.

Internet Bandwidth limitations will probably prevent fast take up of this - the price of large monitors is rapidly reducing - although I must admit some of these mega size screens look ridiculous in some modern tiny boxy homes - makes the living room look just like a Hotel Lobby !!!

Never mind 4K video streams - at full 5K that's about a months data limit done in 5 secs !!!!! -- The whole way of charging for the Internet will have to be changed - you can't really do it by amount of data consumed any more.

The service providers will also have to (yet again) upgrade their equipment to handle all this extra traffic too.

4K is awesome - I can only imagine what 5K must be like - but it does seem strange getting this stuff on stream before 4K is even commonplace.

I don't think the average person has any idea how much data a decent Hi RES video stream consists of -- you can't compare it with Audio in any way whatsoever - even uncompressed FLAC music uses a TINY amount of data compared with a 1080p video stream.

Cheers
