Wintel Tablets to Start at $599

Click image for larger versionWintel (slang for Windows+Intel architecture) tablets, which launch along with Microsoft's latest Windows 8 operating system, which grab a greater market-share than WoA (Windows on ARM) tablets by the end of 2012, DigiTimes research predicts. This, despite the fact that the x86 and ARM versions of the operating system will be released simultaneously. PC majors such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, ASUStek and Toshiba, have all pledged 1-3 models of Wintel tablets by the end of 2012. Although still an emerging market-segment, tablets will see a clash between x86 and ARM architectures, as they are wooing for the same exact class of devices for the first time in computing history. Intel has made a lot of progress in miniaturizing the Atom processor, while led by the likes of Qualcomm and NVIDIA, ARM processors are getting stronger.

This will be interesting. The latest ARM processors are really powerful and when I think of 'Atom', I think of low performance and higher electricity consumption (as compared to ARM).

On the other hand, with a X86 tablet you have access to all the traditional Windows programs.

That is pretty expensive - won't most folk want one of those as a second ( or third ) machine?

$299 would be the right price for a toy like that. I am sure prices will come down after a while when enough competitive devices are on the market. The XOOM also started at $800 and now you can get one for $349.

That sounds probably right for an Intel tablet, but an AMD tablet, NO....

I'll be waiting for AMD's new APU Trinity series to come out to the mobile market. Those, from what I've read and seen, are rather impressive. Intel has always beat the crap out of AMD one the desktop market, but I think the mobile market is where AMD will have their come back. They make decent performing chips for less than Intel, and with less energy consumption. Having said that, I would bet an AMD tablet would run in the 400 range on a really competitive basis. But realistically, 500 might be the actual price, but we'll see.

Actually, you can get a Windows 7 on and AMD processor for 550 dollars...

Coke Robot, in case you don't know yet, Intel will release very soon new 22nm processors that will put out of the market the AMD APU processors. When AMD will not be in the game anymore, Intel will then ask the price they want for their stuff. So Intel processors are cheap the time they eliminate AMD of the market. This, Windows 8 and Microsoft Cloud control is what will look our future.

The 22nm manufacturing process will come at an expense with Intel. It ALWAYS has. Just a 32nm mobile i5 or even i3 processor from Intel would be almost half the price of a Windows slate. AMD has traditionally always been the choice for budget builds. Not only that, they also use less energy and have been known to make strides in reducing energy consumption of their chips. Intel is great on desktops, but going mobile, it's not always that practical. Not everyone needs a top of the line processor, AMD is what the choice will be for that.
