'World's slimmest and lightest Windows Phone' to be shown

What's all this about slimness infatuation ??? I want a BIG FAT battery, if I use half of the things phones are capable of, would have to charge them 3 times a day. Of course there are battery packs, car chargers, even solar chargers but that completely negates phones themselves being thin. I hate that trend, it's just plain stupid or a marketing gimmick.

And it's not just phones or tablets. Laptops are going exactly the same way, all following this slimness trend nonsense. If that means they cannot dissipate the heat and they have to throttle all the time and disable Turbo Boost (like Lenovo does), so be it. Sigh.

The replaceable batteries in the cell phones aren’t all that big. At least in my old Droid X2 it wasn’t. I think they’re trading thickness for thinness via area. This particular phone has a 4.7 inch screen with a fairly large bezel on the top and bottom. Let’s estimate the device is 5 inches long and 3 inches wide. That’s 15 square inches, so that’s plenty to make up the difference I would guess. My Lumia 1520 is 21 square inches.

I agree concerning the heat. My Lumia gets quite warm if I’m on it at a good length of time. That’s a totally sealed case.

Right now I'm using Alcatel One Touch, it's 10mm thick but battery itself is only 4 mm and takes half of the back surface. I did by a spare but it's just another thing to carry around (and forget at home). It's a dual core and eats electricity for lunch. Turn on GPS, bluetooth and WiFi and can see battery going down. Couple of hours and its flat on it's back. What's the use for all those things if it's good only for short time. There are battery packs with 5000 ma/h same thickness as the phone that can be fastened to the back of the phone but that's just another expense and bather. To change a battery normally I have to shut phone down, have fight opening phone, change it and start again the phone and apps. All of that could be avoided by adding another 5mm to the phone and putting much larger battery that would last a day or two in same circumstances. Until few years ago I had phone twice the thickness but battery would last at least 4 days worth of talking and a week of normal use.

Agree. I'd rather have a thicker device with more battery. The article wasn't just about the phone so much as more OEMs releasing Windows phone due to MS dropping it's licensing fees. That was one of the factors that Google had over them with Android. It's free. Now the playing field is a lot more level. I guess their decision was to compete with lower priced phones, not just compete with the overpriced iPhone.

My last two phones were Androids, I don't mind them but my friend has Nokia with Windows, just updated to 8.1 and I find it much more pleasant to work with. I don't know if it is because of more familiar environment or what, but surely works smoother than My Gingerbread and even Jelly bean. I think my next one will be Winphone for sure, I feel more comfortable with it. Had a look at iPhone and really couldn't make heads or tails out of it. Seemed like something from Mars. I'm sure it would be fine if I could get used to it but would take 180 degrees turn of the way I think of the cell phones.
I don't know what happened to Nokia but they were very solid phones you can relay on and now MS is going to kill it dead.

They all have their pros and cons. Like I said, I had a Droid X2. It was a good phone except for a bad screen design. They simply went blank. I had 5 of them in 3 years. Just kept sending it back. Luckily I purchased the extended warrantee. It was a PITA to set up again. Contacts and calendar were backed up with a Google account, but that was it. 2 out of the 5 times activation went well, but the other 3 I had to call it in. Then it takes 3 or 4 days of putzing to download apps (that had to be kept track of), to rearrange the screens to my liking, create shortcuts, speed dial, etc. A PITA!

Upgrading from 8 to 8.1 took 40 minutes > Done! Everything is backed up via MS services. I did have to uninstall/reinstall 2 apps because the live tiles didn't work, so it would have taken less time.

I like the refreshing change of tiles and live tiles for instant info. I know there were widgets, but I got tired of looking at icons. 20 years of icons. I like the way it wavy flows instead of just a screen appearing. We can create folder tiles on the start screen. Now there's Cortana, which is very handy. I hope it's included in 9.

Glad to read you're interested in WP, Count. I never regretted buying this Lumia. I don't think you will either.
