Late May claim for Windows 8 RC jibes with expected timetable

The time frame fits into a familiar pattern previously seen with 7.

Late May claim for Windows 8 RC jibes with expected timetable[/h] [h=2]Dutch blog reports next major milestone due in two months[/h] By Gregg Keizer

March 26, 2012 02:37 PM ET

Computerworld - Microsoft will launch the "release candidate" of Windows 8 in late May or early June, according to a Saturday report by a Dutch blog.

That launch window for the Windows 8 Release Candidate, or RC -- a label for nearly-finished software issued one final time for bug review -- fits with earlier reports claiming the new operating system will go on sale this October.

On Saturday, the WinUnleaked.tk website asserted that, "We know the Release Candidate of Windows 8 will be shared with the public between the end of May [and] the beginning of June." It did not cite any sources for those dates, however.

A week ago, Bloomberg said that computer and tablet makers will have Windows 8-powered PCs and devices ready to sell in October 2012.

The late May-early June talk of Windows 8 RC availability fits the expectations of analyst Michael Cherry of Directions on Microsoft, who last week said Microsoft appeared to be using a schedule that will deliver a release candidate three months after the February 29, 2012, Consumer Preview, with the RTM, or "release to manufacturing," milestone three months after that.

If Cherry is right, that would put Windows 8 RC's debut at the end of May and RTM at the end of August.

(Note the 7 RTM release was seen on August 6, 2009)

Wait, was Windows 7 RTMed in August? I remember that was still Release Candidate for I remember very well that I had to install the RC on my old Dell puter since xp wasn't activated.

I place 10 cents that Windows 8 will RTM in late August or mid-September, right in time for the back to school shopping season for tablets and slates with Windows 8 on them. I say this since PC manufacturers were ticked that 7 was released after the fact and missed the season.

Hi there
Gosh has it already been 3 years since W7 was released --really it seems like yesterday -- and I remember the fun we had around April time back then playing with various builds that were released "into the wild".

Looks like MS has got its finger on the lid more securely this time --but I'm sure leaks will appear sooner or later.

Cheers
jimbo

For non TechNet or MSDN subscribers you have the dates premature there. The participant signup for beta testing release dates were:

Jan 31, 2009 7000 build Beta
May 5 or 6 in that time 2009 RC 7100
August 6 for paid subscribers RTM
Oct. 22, 2009 retail release and retail order taking.

The reason I say order taking is that stores didn't actually have the disks only display sleeves on shelves. You paid and then waited days for the edition to be shipped out from their warehouse or supplier.

(I can remember ordering online from one vendor and the plastic case came in all crushed and broken when ordering 7 as a gift for someone! :( )

You're quite right. I should have clarified in my post. The dates I used, are independent of the release dates to various entities, such as OEM/MSDN/Technet/Connect/Joe public etc. I got these for the Windows 7 Team Blog.

Well those were mainly for the internal testers when compared to the more public release dates. Actually I had begun downloading the RCs before the then specified release date since it was found available at 5:58pm the night before! Two minutes of 6pm Redding local time when simply going to check.

I wasn't as fortunate for the beta builds however spending 4-5hrs. for those while only 45min. to download each RC! What was different for 8 this time however is not seeing any backlog of people rushing to download since the CP was made available. Now to see how well that does with the 8 RC version supposedly to be seen in late May.

(Note one other thing about found different is the VM install not being able to connect is still running after a month's time without being activated until that can connect. It's detecting the host's hardwares while other VMs simply use the shared NAT.)

Besides the normal install to the second test drive I have here I also installed the CP on VM Player 4.0 but haven't been able to connect online at all. :( The one main thing other then that however is seeing 8 detect the physical cards asking for device drivers on a VM to start with. It's even looking for board drivers as well as those for the nic card.

With every other previous version of Windows or another OS even you would simply see the VM use the virtual side for video, sound, and internet while the 8 CP is actually wanting drivers?

That sounds like a VM settings issue. I have CP running in VMWare Workstation 8 and I've not encountered any major problems, yet.

I know extremely little about VMs because my processor/motherboard do not support them and so I don't use them at all.

But from what I see - if it is asking for drivers - why not make it happy and give it to him? heh

Oh I see - looking closer now - code 10....uhhhh well good luck lol. If I think of anything, I'll say it. Maybe try uninstalling the Microsoft line in the Network part of the Device Manager then reboot the VM. Or even try uninstalling both in Network part then rebooting.

That sounds like a VM settings issue. I have CP running in VMWare Workstation 8 and I've not encountered any major problems, yet.

I've already gone over all settings with no results seen for first the 32bit CP and then onto the 64bit CP with two different VMs.

The mystery is why it is asking for drivers for physical hardwares to begin with. Typically you expect to see a shared virtual network adapter not a call for Creative as well as NetGear controllers as well as for the main board.

Night Hawk - is the host different than the VM? Is one 32 bit and the other 64?

I'm fairly sure it would have to ask for drivers like that unless there is some kinda magic mojo that happens in that situation I'm unaware of.

You wouldn't be able to install the two CPs(x86, x64) on the 32bit 7's install of VM Player which would also be 32bit! I run the 64bit Ultimate as well as the 64bit version of VM Player 4.0 being the latest version for that.

Ironically the XP Mode went right onto the VMLite Workstation for XP Mode is able to connect as well as any other VM ware except for the CPs. :( 8 is the only one so far to ever detect and list physical hardwares under "other devices" when looking in the Device Manager.

As a rule you are generally "not able to" install drivers for physical hardwares when on any VM. This is why the Code 0x0 unable to start error is seen there. But why it's not listing the virtual network adapter instead is the puzzle. The other interesting item to note is the use of the network troubleshooting pointing "drivers for network adapter need to be installed"?!

The main reason for VM Player over others like VBox is simple. With a click on the player's button you can unmount(disconnect) the external hard drive or flash drive from host OS to use on the VM without even unplugging and replugging them in. That simplifies file transfers onto VM.

A couple of ideas:

1. Have you installed VMWare tools
2. Post your vmx file

I haven't seen the popup for that at all on VM Player 4.0 but have seen it regularly on the VMLite Workstation. The VM install is mainly a reference install anyways since I already have a working dual boot with 7 seeing the CP on a second test drive.
