Intel finally releases Haswell-E Extreme Edition processor

While most other segments of the PC market that Intel provides processors for -- from mainstream desktops to laptops of all shapes and sizes -- have the felt the impact of its successful rollout of Haswell chips (the fourth iteration of its "Core" platform), the highest of high-end client desktops have been stuck with year-old Ivy Bridge Extreme Edition CPUs. But the wait for gamers, overclockers, and other PC enthusiasts is finally over, as the tech Goliath has officially taken the wraps off its Haswell-E processors.

Most highly anticipated is the new crown jewel of Intel's desktop CPUs, the Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition. The 5960X is noteworthy for being the company's first desktop processor to include eight cores, a total previously reserved for its Xeon server chips, and 16 computing threads. It also marks the debut of DDR4 memory support for Intel's client processors and the new X99 chipset, which includes up to 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, amongst other features. Each core of the 5960X has a base clock speed of 3GHz and can run as fast as 3.5GHz in Turbo Boost mode, and the processor comes with 20MB of L3 cache. As with the top Extreme Edition chips in the past, the 5960X is priced higher than most desktop PCs at $999 (plus inevitable retailer markup), but that won't deter the well-heeled enthusiasts who want the latest and greatest from Intel.

Hi there

Like all things - be careful for what you wish for -- for around 95% of people out there this processor will be vastly overkill - also more power / heat etc especially if they want it in small tablet size things.

The other thing to remember is that each time you increase the number of cores you add a bit of overhead since the processor or OS or both has to manage all the interactions between the Cores -- so an 8 Core won't be 8X as fast or as efficient as 8 individual processors.

8 is probably OK but once you start getting up into 16 / 32 cores overhead will become an issue. !! It might be ignorable but it's still there.

Cheers

Not what it is for really and you'd find it hard to fit a watercooling system in a tablet :)

Intel still recommends its TS13X liquid cooling solution as a bare minimum

Hi there

I'll bet we have some budding Engineers on this Forum who'd be willing to have a go doing that too !!!! -- you probably could do it - the size of the water jets would be about the same size as the ink jets on an inkjet printer - you'd probably need some sort of condenser attached to the outside of the tablet for cooling the water -- this would be bigger and more massive than the tablet of course -- might make an interesting Student Engineering project though - 8 core water cooled tablet needed to play Spider Solitaire on !!!!

To be fair, it is a desktop CPU. If some kind of mobile variant comes along I'm sure it will be underclocked or hobbled in some way.

Hi there

Was only having a "laugh" - but I think it would be amusing to see a tablet with a HUGE condenser at the back running the power almost of a SUPERCOMPUTER so a user could get his / her fix of Spider Solitaire !!!.

I agree there, would be hilarious to see something like that. Battery lasting 10 minutes, or less. :)

Probably will be attempted by someone out there.

Wait! I got it! You carry a car battery around to power it. Now how much more portable can you get?

Er, that includes the case with standard paint job in a choice of colours and labour charges up to that stage then you choose more options as you go along ...they don't sell the components separately.

It's a big confusing how they charge, because when I go 1 step further, then it would be only Hex-Core in that price-range: Click

But it doesn't matter. I like their Builds and they are pretty good, if you don't want to get your hands dirty.

Well I've never fancied my chances as a PC builder so they would suit me fine....if I could afford another monster machine. I'm trying to make my Alienware x58 last by individually upgrading parts as they wear out. It whacked me $7100 back in 2009, just before Dell took them over. Thus far only 1 case fan and 1 HDD has failed, plus I doubled my RAM.
