Windows Phone 8.1, the smartphone of choice for business

In April, we announced Windows Phone 8.1 and with it we introduced several key features that were developed specifically with business customers in mind. Today, Windows Phone 8.1 is the smartphone of choice for many businesses – across the globe and across industries.
Windows Phone 8.1 is uniquely differentiated in a number of key areas, it’s truly enterprise-grade – from its security enhancements to the ease with which IT can provision and manage it. When I hear from customers, manageability in particular stands-out as a top reason they choose Windows Phone. Windows Phone 8.1 integrates very easily into an existing Microsoft infrastructure environment, which makes it a great choice for organizations. It also has a built-in MDM client that allows IT organizations to use their choice of management system (i.e. Windows Intune or third-party MDM tools like MobileIron, Citrix, SAP and Sophos) and simplified device enrollment, helping to lower support costs. Through the MDM system and (SCEP), IT can also enroll, renew and revoke certificates for user authentication.

Companies also tell me they are moving to Windows Phone 8.1 for security. It’s top of mind for a lot of businesses right now. In a world where employees are increasingly using their smartphones to get work done, corporate data is now just as mobile and around-the-clock accessible as employees are. Windows Phone 8.1 evolves the security architecture substantially to help protect company data on smartphone devices – including device encryption to protect the data if it’s lost or stolen; Office Information Right Management (IRM) for protecting documents and email, and new to Windows Phone 8.1 is S/MIME support for signing and encrypting email directly from Outlook. Additionally, Windows Phone 8.1 can utilize remote business data removal to enable IT to wipe corporate data if a device is lost or stolen and it sandboxes apps to better protect against malware and rootkits. Finally, Windows Phone 8.1 now includes virtual private network (VPN) and enterprise Wi-Fi support for secure connectivity to corporate networks.

Customers also choose Windows Phone because of our unmatched range of hardware choice across both form-factors and price points. Running the same OS, customers can choose Windows Phone devices with rich hardware capability as well as devices at price-points that are significantly lower than offerings from our competitors.

And it just keeps getting better. In July we announced the Windows Phone 8.1 Update, which included an array of enhancements, including availability of Cortana in additional markets, to make Windows Phone even more personal by providing it with a personal assistant as well as new Live Folders for the Start screen that can help people organize their apps. It also included improvements to data and identity protection on public networks. For example, the added ability to send and receive data through a virtual private network (VPN) when connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots.
T
op companies like multinational telecommunications company, BT and banking and insurance group, CaixaBank; are among our many Windows Phone customers. Delta Airlines is also a proud supporter, and are working to equip more than 20,000 flight attendants with Nokia Lumia 1520 devices this fall for on-board manuals and in-flight sales.

Hi there

My next one will be a Windows 8.1 (or whatever the next windows is) - PROVIDING the handsets are OK -- I HATE the current crop of handsets -- and although it shouldn't really make a difference if the functionality is good -- I think with a thing like a phone which is used a lot - why shouldn't it LOOK good too.

(After all some people pay several THOUSAND DOLLARS !!!! for just a WATCH !! -- which performs just a simple function of displaying the time - ignoring those new fangled "smart watches" for the moment).

Jim, you keep stressing this and it's really a matter of opinion. I understand your concern over the looks. Yes, if one shells out that much money on a device, one wants it to be personally appealing to them, no doubt, but looks are in the eyes of the beholder. I think the Nokias have a distinctive look that sets them apart from the others. They are indeed thin and sleek to me. The only thing I'd like to see is a metal case as you've suggested in another post, but then a protective cover case is a must I think. A gold, aluminum, and bronze colored ones to exchange depending which watch I'm wearing. ;)

Here's one to kill for. :D

HTC One (M8) For Windows Specs and Reviews | HTC United States

HTC finally took their Windows Phone knock-off and made a Windows Phone out of it. It looks quite nifty actually, the Dot View case is also a cool feature to counter Nokia's glance screen. And apparently, it's literally the HTC One but running Windows, and it actually gets better battery life by two hours than running android. android is the Windows xp of smartphones, why is there a power menu? I'll never understand that.

If you don't like Nokias (that's a claim right there! :p), there's going to be a ton of new OEMs for 8.1, much like with 7's initial launch.

Hi there

The IPhone 6 might have stuff going for it -- but I don't like "ICHOONES" at all so that's why I'll probably skip it even though it's bound to be a hugely appealing (although expensive) phone.

I'm old. I'm not a tech person. My first smartphone was a Nokia and I felt the Windows 8 was very limiting. I read the Microsoft ad cited in the OP and it's simply an ad. For example:
"Customers also choose Windows Phone because of our unmatched range ofhardware choice across both form-factors and price points. "

Really? Unmateched range of hardware choice? Android just can't compare in hardware choice to phones running Windows 8.1?

I didn't realize the choice they meant was the color of the phone. What I would like to see in this thread is some details as to why Windows 8.1 works for you. For example:

HippsieGypsie: "If one runs 8.x on there tower or pad it's the only phone to consider. It sure simplified my life."

Wonderful. How? What about it simplied your life?

Okay, I'm cynical about advertising and more inclined to listen to possibly honest user experience. If Hippsie tells me how it simplified life I won't think money has changed hands.

The integration of services is really good.
So, being able to share things across devices, pretty much all platforms have this
But,,,
Access to information at a glance via Live Tiles is beyond impressive, no one else has this.

From everything I have read and seen, Androids lag on the same hardware that WP8.x runs smooth as butter on.
The fluid operation is unmatched with Android. They keep throwing better hardware at it, but can't get it smoothed out.

The layout and navigation of Apps and utilities (such as Messaging) makes way more sense on a WP
over both Android and Apple, and is a lot easier to use over all. Even the settings are easier to navigate.
Live Folders are a god send to WP, and are very impressive.

Hardware Choice,, yes,,, Nokia Lumia Icon, 1520 and 1020 are top of the line phones on the market
across all vendors and platforms. They truly are unmatched. There isn't anything better on the market, period.
Even the iPhone6 can't touch them in quality for hardware, or Camera/Video.
Woo, it's gonna be super thin, light and a large screen, big deal, the camera blows.
No Live Tiles, integration with MS services might be be there, but that really isn't a win.

Oh, I forget, Apple is gonna have a 5.5inch phone now and that will be the greatest thing
since the invention of Post-IT Notes. And everyone will sing Joy to the World, what masters of innovation.

But, there are a number of hardware choices to fit the budget of anyone looking for a WP8.

Seriously, people need to get passed their Bias of Windows and take a real serious look and
more than a 5 min drive of the Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 8.1, including Surface Pro.
They truly are beyond impressive.

You know not too long ago I would have pooh-poohed your post about how good the Windows phones are and how well integrated with Windows tablets and desktops.

But then along came the Surface Pro. I saw one of the originals in the store and thought it very nice, but still too much money for something that new to the market with an OS that was getting hammered in the press and some forums.

Then the SP2 came out and the price tumbled on the original. I got a SP1 w/128Gb open box for just a shade over $500. After starting to use it more, I fattened it up with a Power Cover ($99 open box) and Dock ($99 BB sale).

Then I got a 23" HP Beats desktop and the die was set.

The phone will be next, but that won't happen until May of next year because of my contract. Odds are that it will be a top of line WIndows Phone, whatever that turns out to be.

Those will all replace my soon to be sold MBPr.

I work for an international company. Fairly small, but we have offices in Australia, US, and UK. Nobody has asked for a Windows phone. We replace phones every 2 years in the US, and it seems that people are either waiting for the iPhone6 or getting the Samsung Galaxy S5. We have more demand for the BlackBerry than the Windows phone.

I have only met two people who use a Windows phone.

My phone is up for renewal, and I've looked at the Windows phone, but I use runkeeper a lot and they dont have a Windows phone version. That's going to be the showstopper for me.

I'm used to RunKeeper. It has all of my historical information in it. I've got friends that use it, so it has social aspects. It has all of my normal routes saved in it. It works with the Garman GPS watch which can dump into it. I use it for my cycling as well as my running.

1 of the 2 people that I know who went to a Windows phone IS using Endomondo. I would just really like to NOT have to change apps.

And since I work in a techie company, and all of my coworkers have phones and apps we all use for work, it's nice to stay consistent with what they all use. It's a pain when we find something that will work for a task only to find out the guy with the Blackberry, or the guy with the windows phone cannot get that particular app.

As someone who has been an early adopter of Windows Phone and Windows 8, and then later a Surface tablet, I can speak from experience how things are so much more simpler across devices. First and foremost is the Microsoft account syncing between all devices. This entails my 113ish gigs of OneDrive storage are all easily accessible on my Windows Phone and Surface tablet. What I have going in Internet Explorer syncs across all devices. Having a similar Start Screen experience on my Surface and desktop PC means I'm not using two distinctly different and distinctly set up devices; they're both similar but only have what each device is meant for. I love the accent color syncing between my phone and PC, although a tad limiting on the Windows Phone side honestly, that needs improvement.

Universal apps are next. They're a very new thing still but top apps on Windows Phone I've noticed as well as Windows, are being built as universal apps. One app on different devices tailored to each device. The major thing I like about apps is on all platforms, app settings are saved and backed up, meaning when I got my Surface tablet, it took all of 10ish minutes to have what I've spent literally almost three years on Windows 8 with my desktop to my tablet that simply and easily. On Windows Phone, all the same as well. I went through flashing a custom image on that as well to bypass idiot att's crappy update process and afterwards, again, what I spent almost two years on 8 synced all right back, albeit the Start Screen and apps needed redoing but most app settings were saved.

And let's not forget the fact of live tiles. What would have taken many internet tabs to accomplish inefficiently take up the size of a third of a Start Screen. What I need to know and want to know is at a glance ready for me to see versus me actively searching for that content online. What I care about most in my life gets reflected on the Start Screen of my PC and Windows Phone.

Hi there

The IPhone 6 might have stuff going for it -- but I don't like "ICHOONES" at all so that's why I'll probably skip it even though it's bound to be a hugely appealing (although expensive) phone.

Cheers

We will get some iPhones 6C via our provider in January or so, then un-lock and sell them and get new Lumia's, as we upgrade every 2 years our mobile phones.

:)

I totally agree.

Yanno, I can see a certain validity in the thread title. For some business types, specifically the subset that rely heavily on windows and have extensive out of office needs, there is a clear place for the winphone, especially where a laptop would be considered overkill.
