Internet Explorer on Android or iOS? Not in current plans

The cross-platform push may be on at 'cloud first/mobile first' Microsoft, but for now, Internet Explorer isn't one of the products the company is planning to make available on iOS or Android.

There's been a big cross-platform push at Microsoft for the past year or so, with the company releasing its software and services for non-Windows-powered devices -- sometimes even ahead of the Windows versions.

So what about Internet Explorer? There was a version of IE for Mac up until 2003, after all. So couldn't -- and shouldn't -- a "cloud first/mobile first" Microsoft make IE available on non-Windows devices, too?

It sounds like the answer, at least for now, is no.

Isn't IE deeply embedded within the Windows OS now to the point they are co-dependent? I wonder just how difficult it would be to make it stand-alone at this point.

    Hi there.

IE is actually the whole file system - which essentially is "the core" of the OS. There really isn't actually any difference between the "File explorer" and IE explorer -- if in File explorer you type say //SMB: or an Internet address you'll get that without even firing up IE -- they are essentially the same program embedded deep in the OS. It works in reverse too - If you type a local file address in IE then IE will browse local files.

I'm not sure why Ms would even THINK about making IE available on android -- afterall it's got a perfectly good functioning browser on the Windows 8.1 phone which is actually doing better than just "limping along". It's becoming quite well liked by "Ex Blackberry -- that means usually business people) users too.

    Cheers
