Windows 8.1 Aug Update Released (KB2975719)

  1. #71

A suggestion. Some may want to configure updates to "download and let me decide to install". Then watch how it goes for others and then decide if one wants to install or not.

I had Start8 but I removed it without any difference, still the same we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes

Fortunately here it's still working, this is the 7th or 8th try with the same message LOL, hope it won't screw as having to install all games and updates and settings again is so painful (as I have not spare disks to make complete backups). I've made a thread about this but nothing so far!

Optional updates have always caused most issues,
    Seems this verifies that

Most people don't realize the simple setting to change is Uncheck give me Recommended updates the same as Important ones
I personally have never auto download and installed win updates learned years ago even Important ones,
But for most novice I would still set it auto update just not Optional or Recommended updates,
    Freaking non-sense ruble symbol update
    Cheers.

Of course that M$ is known to schmuck up a lot, there would be no need to update or change anything if it was perfect but the fact is that we have to be ready for that. I gave up on regular updates in XP and partly in Win7 but apart from an unknown change in how some drivers work, GPU drivers i my case,8.1 upgrade and all other updates went without a hitch. On the other hand, I haven't made any great changes to system, no "special" programs for start menu or "miracle" programs for "fixing" what needs no fixing, all the drivers are optimal (that does not mean newest). All cleaning done by "Disk cleaner", no defraging of disks (they all stay under 1%), automatic maintenance is turned off. Avast free and Malwarebytes take care of nasty stuff (with a lot of my help because I'm careful enough). All the programs that are being installed and tried are properly checked beforehand and uninstalled with Revo uninstaller after.
And NO I don't trust MS or any software or hardware, so I have backups, one with virgin Windows as installed first time, one with all the drivers and all necessary programs and one that I regularly replace while going is good. Only first one I had to use twice because of inadequate drivers from AMD for video card. Second one I used couple of times to put system on another HDD for testing. All personal data is safely tucked away on disks other than system disk and backed up according to importance (maybe some 25-30% of all the files I have on the computer itself). When I try other OSs, it's on a separate HDD with all disks on the primary system disconnected.

Which is an insane situation to be in. If I get infected by some malware from Russia then it quietly installs and runs in the background, stealing my credit card details. If I apply an official Microsoft update then it bluescreens my computer and makes it unusable. The malware is actually less destructive than Microsoft's updates. I shouldn't need to make a full system backup every time Microsoft releases an update to Windows.
MS doesn't steal your credit card information, so how is that more destructive?!

Not sure about you, but the first 3 rules I was taught in computing was 1. Backup 2. Backup 3. Backup.

Sometimes installing any software may break a system, so therefore backup. Mirroring is the best IMO. I'm sure many will back me on that.

    Excellent question!
I had start 8 installed before updating, I see no issues with it. I could uninstall and reinstall to check, but I wont :P

OK, it was just a hunch that maybe one of those Start Menu programs messed up a system file that needed to be updated. Third party Antivirus or security suits would be my next guess. My systems are pretty stock. Other than some games and driver software its all Microsoft Programs. Windows Defender, Microsoft Office 2013 etc.

Yes, so therefore, just as the non-sleeping problem Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep there are variables that are difficult to pinpoint. MS did release an update that addressed the problem back around December that resolved the problem for many, but not for all. Some still struggle with it. It may be the same thing here, but let's wait to lay blame.

While using the "New Posts" button this morning I noticed that there were more posts on BSODs than usual. Not sure if that's a usual thing after Update Tuesday. I'll try and take notice next month.

"Cortana, make me a reminder" > "Sure thing. What do you want me to remind you about? > "New posts after Update Tuesday" > "What date?" > "September 11" > "What time would you like me to remind you?" > "8 a.m." > "OK. I'll remind you of New posts after Update Tuesday on Wednesday September 11 at 8:00 a.m. Is that correct?" > "Yes". > "OK. I've added that."

    What a beauty she is!

If Cortana is that smart, it should also remind you to do backup before updating, just in case....
Cortana > hey Hipsie, did you make system backup > No I didn't > well do it for heaven's sake, don't cry to me when something croaks > OK. I will, don't be such a nag.
