    Hi there
what does this actually Buy you -- AVAST don't have access to the latest MS Kernel and do you have to run Manual updates to get the latest VIRUS definitions from a database.

Windows defender does this all SEAMLESSLY IN REAL TIME -- and as Ms hasn't released the windows kernel to some of these 3rd party AV suppliers you are relying on are using the W7 version which IS NOT THE SAME KERNEL as W8.

Believe me the days of free 3rd party AV software are over -- no need for it.

Protecting Corporate networks is another issue - but that's not the problem here.

    Cheers

The Windows Defender in 8 is far from what was seen in 7 namely the MS SE under a different name. The old WD would never have flagged a trojan found stored on a storage drive or device.

I suspect the main reason why you would be seeing the SE included with the 8 CP is mainly from MS making it widely available without the need to sign up to beta test any beta, RC builds as seen with the previous versions of Windows. You won't hear any favorable reports if everyone gets nailed by some bug right after downloading the CP now would you?

They wanted everyone to have a look without worrying about the need for an av but for the Previews only not the retail product to come later. There you are on your own!

I would doubt that's true. Microsoft have beed offering MSE, as a option with Windows Updates, for a while now, so including MSE in Windows 8 is not significantly different. It's also worth reading Protecting you from malware

It let me install it every time, several times now.

Microsoft was sued in Europe by providing IE with base OS instead of "allowing people to choose which browser they prefer".

Will this happen again with Anti-Virus makers vs MSE/WD?

Just my opinion, but I don't think the AV companies will go out of business for the simple reason that MS Operating system is hacked so much that we need 3rd party applications to protect us.

How is a 3rd party security program going to protect better than Defender, even if there are lots of vulnerabilities found?

Well jimbo you may know a lot more about the MS operating system then most of us. I don't doubt that at all. But past history of MS security protection has proven that hackers love a challange. Once bitten and hope never again That is why 3rd party AV software was created. That is why we trust them over MS and willing to pay for their protection and support.
I give it 3 months after launch and the forums will be reporting security hacks. The day MS is bulletproof I will eat my hat
Many of us like MS operating system because it fits our needs of every day use. But not all of what MS includes in there OS release is suitable for us.
I trust MS to run all my applications but I trust 3rd party AV to protect me better.
