During a quick search on the subject, it was mentioned that MSE doesn't work correctly when installed on Win8. Meaning it may not be protecting your system as it normally would on previous OSs.

Since MS has made the new Defender basically the same as MSE (and compatible) on the Win8 version and they have an update to block MSE from being installed, leads me to believe that there is an issue with MSE when installed on Win8.

Those of you that installed MSE should consider un-installing it and enabling Defender-8 or install another Win8 compatible anti-virus protection program.

There was a post on a MS site explaining how to re-install enable Defender-8, if I find it again I will post it here.

    Edit:
If you uninstall any anti-virus app, you should be able to enable Defender through the control panel.

How do I keep Windows 8 Consumer Preview secure from malware?
Thank you for the heads up! Appearances may not always be what they seem. Glad to know of the problem and will take appropriate action.

Well, I have been using Norton AV 2012 on the W7 box. I happen to enjoy all the bells and whistles on it (just me). Well they had a special deal for Norton Internet Security. So I got that. It is known to work with W8 so I added my 2nd subscription to my W8 Box. It seems to not only have disabled Windows Defender as the replacement, but Windows Firewall to and replaced it with it's Firewall. Didn't know it had a firewall. So I can't run either. I do want a backup standalone AV, using Malwarbytes Antimalware as that. Maybe I'll try AVG, have heard it is pretty good. Again, good info that helped me locate some more issues that need dealing with!

The Windows Defender seen in the CP isn't the Windows Defender previously seen in 7! It's a newer version of the MS Security Essentials under a different name and why the previously released MS SE is incompatible with 8.

That was put to the test here when it uncovered a malware(trojan inside zip file) on a storage. I knew then it wasn't any WD! That wouldn't have caught a bug out in the open let alone concealed in an old supposed XP utility download.

MS apparently wanted to include some protection in the CP this time around rather then the previous versions's beta builds where you had to add your own on so even the novice user could try it out without worry of getting slammed by a malware and thinking the CP was buggy and no good.

I'm actually hoping this stays in the gold release. AV companies may cry foul, but they can still push their suites to users that don't realize that they already have AV. And those users that are unaware of the need for AV will be secured anyways. I think I read a statistic while ago that an estimate 17 million users in china alone don't have antivirus (4.4% of chinese internet users), which is a pretty big number.

I doubt you would find anywhere near as many malwares floating around there since most viruses surprizingly are aimed at businesses not the private home user. For that there are other types of phising scams and trojan droppers, etc..

When the W8 CP's version of Defender tagged a file on one of the drives used for storage which WD in 7 could never do showing something was new! Even if it was a false positive it shows a more determined detection process. That will benefit those who try to run without any protections on like an av or antispyware program.

    Hello,
Was wondering if there have been any changes with MSE or Windows Defender. Once again, I am running Norton NIS, and usually in W7 kept MSE as a standalone backup scanner to Norton. I have not found a way to use Defender as a standalone backup scanner. I trusted MSE and I assume Defender is at least as good as, but it seems to have turned itself off, because of Norton.
I want to download MSE which will allow me to do as before except for the reported blocks and that it seems to work fine and it is reported not to work. Currently using Avast as my backup. Would prefer Defender. This is I assume completely impossible, correct?
    Thanks

The reason Norton disables Defender is because rule #1 of Windows computing is: Only have one antivirus installed and working at a time.

It's the same reason why it is advisable to either remove Norton or Avast.

They have drivers and these drivers at times do not want other drivers like them active at the same time.

From what I can see, is that Norton 360 still disables MSE/Windows defender, WHICH makes me quite happy.
I don't think Microsoft NEEDS to be in the Windows Security software business.
