Windows 8 Consumer Preview - One word: fail

I am desktop enthusiast 100%. I don't mean on just this site. Amongst friends and family, I have a repeated rant I go into about cell phones, how they're even allowed on the internet (I know you can't ban them hah) - meaning I enjoy desktop so much as well as the internet that I wish the web did not evolve into a million types of devices. Why? Just because. But with all that, I don't try to change the world or anything about it lol. I also dislike the "culture" in general of cell phones.

I am only mildly enthusiastic about laptops.

But imagine this. You, I and everyone else have never used or even seen an OS before, but say, we do have some tech understanding of how to play a CD or DVD on a hardware player - things like that. So you are now using Windows 8 for the first time. The reaction would probably be "Oh man this is so cool!", and that would be that.

So, thank you for reading my defense of the OS.

It could be better. They have the skills. They are getting very, very good at stability/reliability though too.

Wow, when I read articles like this, they make me laugh. Usually, the complaints are taking something somewhat mundane and blowing them out of proportion.

I still can't understand how the Consumer Preview takes longer for him to boot than the DP. It's faster, and everything is much more stable than the DP. It acts betters and has better device support as well.

Meh

The CP takes longer to boot, than the DP, on my PC.

I've found the CP to be worse, than the DP:
  • Longer boot time (not that I care about boot time anyway)
  • No sound (sound driver won't install correctly, it did in W8 DP).
  • No "Start Menu".

Things that are the same:

  • Can't change font types.
  • Can't adjust font size (not dpi setting).

Good features:
  • Reduced RAM usage vs W7.
  • Good operating speed.

Article is complete crap, Consumer Preview is much faster and stable then previous editions. Also, if you don't like Metro than use desktop, what's the big problem. Also the dam thing isn't done, they have 7 more months before it is released, lighten up and get a life.

Article linked in first post is funny.

I had a look at Vistart and found it not much use , sadly.

For those who want something along those lines with better functionality - you could give Start Menu 7 a go.

It is quite funny - I was going to say - if they removed the start menu - because the majority weren't using it all that much, they may as well remove diskmgmt and the command propmt. The majority don't even know those last two exist.

Seems that may be happening anyway.

Recent Items is a blow - important to me.

Someone said something in a podcast linked somewhere here, but people like this are like Apple fanboys. Why do you Metro lovers care this much what other people think who disagree with you? Why are you so emotionally attached to a freaking OS? What was "pulled off" here was a nice bit of childish pouting. A lot of people genuinely do not like Metro. Maybe you're the ones who need to get over it, whatever "it" is eating you up like this. And I'm not trying to start a fight here, I'm just saying - seriously, lighten up - follow your own advice. You'll end up with a stroke before age 40.

Is it too much to ask if we can discuss this rationally?

W8 DP had no problems and it had sounds (maybe not the login/logoff ones).

As for the other things, why weren't they just transfered across, like most of the standard W7 functions?

Oh ok. That's weird. I would bet the other things weren't transferred probably because it's still in development. Keep in mind, this is a beta build, not a build that is threshold away from the final. I would imagine most if not all is transferred over.

Or maybe the things missing are missing because they're not fully completed.....

The logon and off sound events aren't going to be gone. There will be a new sound scheme.

There again, the missing items may simply be a consequence of Microsofts continued 'dumbing down' the Operating System.

It is possible that size is a consideration.

They might be trimming things out to stop it being enormous.

Thanks for proving my point, I'll refrain from the condescending comments however.
