Three Ways Web Browsing Changes With IE10 in Windows 8

Mar 14, 2012 8:22 pm [h=1]Three Ways Web Browsing Changes With IE10 in Windows 8[/h] By Joseph Fieber, PCWorld

While Metro apps for both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have been recently announced, users are getting a chance to actually use the Metro app for IE10 in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Providing a full-screen browsing window and touch friendly controls, the desktop experience feels like using browsers on smartphones and tablets, even on a desktop or laptop, though less intuitive when using a mouse.

In the Building Windows 8 blog on Tuesday, Rob Mauceri, group program manager for Internet Explorer, explains the changes to IE10 and how the Metro interface is different. The new additions can be broken down into these three categories.

Here's the best part of that report.

Change for the Better?
The drastic changes in the Metro version of IE10 were done for a very specific reason: to make web-browsing more accessible to touch-friendly devices. Users of Windows 8 on a tablet will find IE10 intuitive and easy to use. For those who haven’t browsed on a mobile device and are using a mouse and keyboard on a desktop or laptop, the IE10 Metro app will be confusing and inefficient, at least at first. Those users will find the desktop version of IE10, which is very similar to previous versions, to be a better choice.

They missed a few things:

No favourites (there's pinning instead)
No tabs as such (just screens)
No plugins (it's either HTML5 or use the option to view the page in the desktop IE10)
One size fits all screens, whilst that's fine on a 10" device it's mad on a big screen.

Tell me about it! I can't even log into a few sites I frequent with the IE 10 beta now seen in the CP. It's not the final IE 10 version being seen quite yet. The report mentions a desktop version which suggests two different flavors of IE will be seen by the time 8 is retail.

(Hopefully two different desktops as well! Don't run anything touchscreen here. Touchscreens also found to be oversensitive press once to see multiple windows open...)

There are two versions of IE 10 currently available in CP, the Metro variant and the standard desktop variant, are you referring to the standard desktop version?

That would be the one. That's the version of IE pinned to the taskbar not the IE button found on the Start screen which takes up the entire screen.

The Developer Preview's version of IE kind of sucked, I stopped using it so much. But the Consumer Preview just made it MUCH better to use. Though it's better, it should act much more like the Desktop version. I don't want to see my last viewed page open when I hit the IE tile. When I close down the metro IE 10, I want it to act like I hit 'X' and when I restart it, it should go to my preset homepage.

The IE 10 in the DP was the earlier beta just in time for the DP itself being a developer's version itself. That was more on the idea of what was seen with the IE 9 preview to some extent there.

Being that even with the CP 10 is still roughly a beta I added a few other browsers on at first having problems with the 64bit flavor of FireFox called WaterFox in order to log in. The IE 10 either one in the CP would simply sit there and spin doing nothing else.

Apparently it's still too early for 10 to be prompting for flash player, shock player and only a few MS updates seen so far for the CP. But again all this is still in "Preview" form and not the final version of 10 being seen so far. If they release a CP2 by then you may see IE 10 out for general use since they often tend to release the next version proceeding the RTM release of the next version of Windows.

I strongly agree with this. I've been futzing with settings constantly to see if there's any way to get the homepage or even pinned and frequent tiles to open instead with no luck.

I click the X on the IE bar at the bottom where it says "restore last session". That's just with IE 9. For 10 you may want to add a favorite namely your home page to the Favorites bar. Of course that when using the windowed mode not the IE button on Start.
