Windows 8.1 update 2 reportedly will land August 12

Windows 8.1 users can expect the next update to the OS in less than a month. At least so claims one site.

Leaked information from Russian site PCPortal.org.ru pegs August 12 as the date for Windows 8.1 update 2, according to tech news site Neowin. Though the report can't be confirmed, Neowin considers it authentic based on prior information.

In April, sources told ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley that Update 2 could arrive in August. Microsoft's Patch Tuesday, the time when the company rolls out new patches and bug fixes, is typically the second Tuesday of the month, so August 12 seems like a logical date for the update.

    Hi there.

Some of these so called leaks are just contradicting each other.

Now I don't know how many people here are used to managing quite large scale projects - but would you in all honesty bring out a significant change to the current windows (alleged to be August) when you are going to roll out a totally NEW version (W9 / threshold or whatever) a bare 6 months later.

Doesn't seem worth the candle to me. I could imagine a "Service pack" but that would hardly be a new version unless Windows 8.1 update 2 is merely a service pack which it's likely to be. Logically it makes NO sense for windows 8.1 update 2 to contain anything significantly new other than possibly some new hardware drivers, fix any significant defects found or add a few new metro apps.

Changing how metro apps work for example - in re-sizeable windows (not fixed 1/2, 1/4 screen etc) WOULD imo be significant - that's probably a feature for Windows 9.

The only other thing is that IF W8.1 update 2 IS a significant change then I wouldn't expect Windows 9 until LATE (Q4) 2015 or even Q1 2016. But I suspect it will be earlier as W8 is definitely a "Tainted brand" in the public's view in spite of great improvements made in Windows 8.1 update 1 over the original Windows 8.

That I agree, would be nice but the part about making resizable Apps would take some code rewriting I suppose, something that was not seen on large scale in SPs for previous Windows.

    Hi there

Designing stuff on WINDOWS which is classically based on running applications in re-sizeable windows has been the CORE of windows even as far back as Windows rel 1. !!!

Seems to me that with a whole slew of different devices with different screen resolutions designing applications to use a fixed pixel quantity rather than traditional windows breaks the whole purpose of windows -- also it creates problems for users - especially those with modern HUGE monitors or mult-monitor setups.

My concession to the whole Metro idea would also be able to run CLASSICAL applications as well optionally in re-sizeable - BUT BORDERLESS windows (I.e no titles / toolbars etc) which revert to standard "titled mode" if you press ESC key or make another action.

    Cheers

Yup, one really can't read much into these leaks at all... the latest shows the new Start menu running on Windows 8.1 with a build string 6.4.97xxx - ie. a new kernel and a build number close to RP (if M$ is consistent in their release naming conventions - 8.0 RTM being 9200, 8.1 RTM being 9600, thus new this DP/CP release should be 98xx and RTM 10000?)

I also think Update2 is likely to be just a rollup of KB's like an SP.

Until a preview gets leaked it's anyone's guess....

Does anyone know what these update do? I have a friend who did the Important and Optional Windows Updates and now when he goes to the "Metro" window, the taskbar doesn't appear and disappear as it did before. It's now a permanent resident on the bottom of his monitor. He thinks this could be a...
