Leaked Win 9 screens show hybrid Start/Metro button

Article Title: Leaked build of Windows 9 shows reborn Start menu, Metro apps running on the Desktop

New leaked screenshots of an early development build of Windows 9 show the Start Menu is Back - but so is Metro and now they are together in one.

Over the last couple of days, screenshots that purport to be from an early build of Windows 9 (Threshold) have leaked online. Most notably, one of these screenshots includes the new, resurrected Start menu that Microsoft first showed off at its Build conference in April. Another screenshot shows Metro apps running in a window on the Desktop. The leaked Start menu appears to be physically identical to the one shown off in April, but with a different set of tiles, indicating that the Metro portion of the Windows 9 Start menu will be customizable in the same way as the current Windows 8 Start screen.

For those who hated Metro and loved the apps like Start 8 that gives Windows 8 users back the ability to have a start button and go straight to the desktop on boot - essentially making it so you Never have to see or use the Metro screen - this may be a Big issue because now, you won't be able to get rid of Metro. You are stuck with it. I feel Microsoft did this on purpose.. a kind of saying to Windows users, " We don't care what you want, we are going to force you to use the OS as We want you to" - That's how this seems to me though I could be wrong.. Time will tell.

It looks to me what they did here is simply replace the familiar start menu with a start menu like metro screen. In other words, they made the Metro screen smaller and packaged it to look like a start menu.

As this is an early development build things Can change and this may not wind up in the finished product. What do the EightForums members think about this?

Although not a true Win 7 like Start button I would prefer it to what there is now. I don't need to get rid of Metro so this will be a step in the right direction. If they give me Win 9 for free (a rumor) or give it to me in 8.1 Update 2, either way I will take it. I certainly would not upgrade to Win 9 for a fee just to get it.

Hmm... not sure that that (in the screenshot) appeals to me.

I honestly honestly can't see why so many hate the W8/W8.1 start screen as they do. It has nicer visuals, and its far more customisable... and you can get more on. Personally, I'm one who never "took" to W7 but that's another story...

Just a sayin' :orb: ;)

I like the way it is now. I have no interest in using a third party tool to bring back the old start menu. I'll reserve judgment on this new layout if and when it becomes fact. My first impressions are that I hope its optional and can be turned off.

Same here but if by any chance, fluke or whatever, they come up with something better I'll give it a try. On the other hand they might not give us a choice. Judging by past experience it will probably be "Use it or lose it" scenario.

Exactly the way I use it, only couple of APPs, one live tile and the rest is for desktop programs, a giant Start menu divided by nature of programs. I would prefer to scroll vertically.

Some older programs will not show up on the main Start screen at all since 8.1 upgrade but are there on All Apps menu from which you have manually to set them to main Start screen, In Win 8, programs and some files from them were indiscriminately placed on Start screen, making a mess of it. With 8.1 is almost opposite. All Apps screen can be set to show desktop programs first.

Hi there

You seem to have got me confused --you say you prefer to scroll VERTICALLY but show the tiles which essentially is a HORIZONTAL system.

Not wishing to re-hash the old menu system again - I think there are enough facilities to suit most people's preferences -- 3rd party apps, custom toolbars, or the bog standard Ms system. Within that gamut people can find and use what they like best so IMO the whole Menu argument is getting more and more irrelevant.

By giving users the option to boot straight to the desktop Ms have essentially removed the sting out of the menu argument -- pity that option wasn't in the original W8 package. !!

What I'm interested in is in seeing what new hardware systems might be coming out eventually for using as "computers" and how they will interface with "Classic systems". I can't say the idea of a "Google Watch" appeals to me - but I could envisage a small wearable device that projects what a SATNAV does and display it directly on to the windscreen (see through of course) rather like some displays in military aircraft. Classical GPS systems for me I find too fiddly and invariably the screens are too small.

Cheers
jimbo
