    Hi there

Whether Metro apps or not running Windows on a desktop (or even laptop) with a large external monitor (not using laptops Touch screen) I still prefer the Cascading menu approach -- easily done with Custom toolbar and you can cascade and start Metro apps as well (and pin to desktop if you want to).

I've got a thread about how to add Metro apps to the cascading menu from the desktop (and / or pin to desktop too). No registry hacks or 3rd party stuff needed. All standard windows.

The trick with Metro is how to find the application name and where it resides -- they aren't simple .exe files -- usually have a whole load of randomly seeming numbers rather like registry keys. The post explains how to find and identify those easily.

Metro apps - desktop / taskbar / create cascading menu

I like this approach as I don't have to leave / enter another environment if I want to run Metro apps -- not that any are of much use currently - but when they are properly re-sizeable (and ideally borderless) rather than using fixed sizes (1/2, 1/4 etc) they could be useful later on.

    Cheers

Functionally the new start menu is basically the same as the one in Windows 7 today, albeit "jazzed up" a bit for metro apps. That said, I'm more concerned about them tightening up the modern UI app programs, and giving those developers better tools. Every time I load a new modern UI app it's like Russian Roulette in Event Viewer. Sometimes the apps run great, other times they fail miserably. Leading me to wonder what, if any, standard testing is required for approval in the Windows app store. Get some consistency among the approved applications and the whole "modern UI" on "Start" will be more of a blessing and less of a nuisance.

You are so right about those Apps, looks like they are just trying to "stock" the store with as much stuff as possible without regard for quality or even if they work. I don't know how much help developers are getting but QC is awful. To make it even worse, it doesn't even look that they are adequate even for devices they are intended for (tablets etc.)

Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results each time, is the very definition of insanity. If they try to foist this turd on us AND disable Classic Shell's ability to work around it, they will have yet again a major disaster on their hands.

On the other hand. so long as we can work around it, then who gives poop.(<- yes, I cleaned it up for the board...)

Bleh it is more or less the same thing but a bit jazzed up. People don't like changes in general and most of the population likes to fret.

Hi all, I have this odd error with changing the lock screen that's been driving me mad and I really don't want to have to reinstall just because of this. Going to PC settings shows this screen: 41249 Note how the lock screen tile is empty. Clicking on it brings me to this:

I've Googled extensively and found plenty of suggestions to bring back the old Win7-style start menu with its button in a variety of ways, but that's not actually what I want. I'd like to have a start button on the taskbar where the Win7 one was; on clicking this button once, it should bring me...

Stop metro app start screens in Software and Apps
As seen before with previous versions of Windows, and window animations, I'm guessing that the new behaviour of displaying a full screen icon for each loading metro app is unnecessary. I say this because it means starting an instance of Metro IE10 takes a few seconds when on a SSD equipped PC it...
