Microsoft schedules Surface Pro 3 update to fix Wi-Fi

Early adopters of the Surface Pro 3 who’ve been struggling with some hardware- and driver-related bugs can expect more relief soon.

A firmware-and-driver update delivered last week was intended to clear up some known issues with sleep and Wi-Fi connectivity issues, among others.

A separate driver update, due to be delivered on Wednesday, July 16, will address some of the remaining issues.

In a post on Microsoft’s Surface support forums, a spokesperson said the “second July update for Surface Pro 3 Wi-Fi” should address most (but not all) remaining issues. Collectively, he said, this month’s updates should address the three biggest “limited connectivity” complaints, in which network performance degrades after exiting Connected Standby, after resuming from hibernation, or during active use.

I'm not having any wifi issues with my SP3 so I hope the update doesn't break anything.

Hi there

Thanks for the update --however I'm not having any issues so far. I'd suggest that unless you have problems don't apply the firmware --I believe the old Engineer's' adage --"If it ain't Broke Don't Fix it". If a firmware update gets hosed up then you stand a serious risk of Bricking your device.

I knew when I posted that someone would tell me not to install the update. I generally adhere to the rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." EXCEPT when it comes to OS updates. I have a number of personal machines and a slew of test servers for work that are all set to install all updates. I want to make sure software I develop is running with the latest updates. I have been doing this for quite a few years and can vaguely remember only 1 time on 1 machine the need to back out a driver update.

Hi there

In principle it's OK to update an OS - but updating firmware is a totally different ballgame --if it does go wrong you can easily "BRICK" a device. Just look at some of the posts on "Custom Roms" on some of the smart phone / android forums.

You can always install a new OS - but if a firmware update goes "South" then you generally can't even BOOT to repair / undo the damage.

Have been having Wi-Fi problems on my i5/128 GB SP3 for a while. This seems to alleviate the problem somewhat, as I don't lose the connection when I wake from hibernation (or whatever it's called with this new Connected Standby feature). Still, around half the time when I turn on the SP3, I get a Limited Connection right away. Luckily, that is easy fixed.
