Update to enable automatic update for Windows RT & RT 8.1

On July 1, Microsoft released an update to Windows RT that will allow users to automatically update from Windows RT to Windows RT 8.1.

This is more interesting than it might seem because of Microsoft's operating system group's focus on getting as many of its Windows users as possible to run the latest versions of its Windows releases.

Today's Windows RT update -- available via Windows Update -- may be a precursor to the release of a similar automatic update for Intel-based machines to enable users to move more easily from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. (I've asked Microsoft officials if this is the case. No word back so far.)

Update: It looks like this is exactly what's happening. Here's what the Microsoft spokesperson said, via a statement:

"This (Windows RT) pilot program is an example of ways we’re experimenting to help ensure more of our customers benefit from a continuously improving Windows experience. Similar to how the Windows 8.1 Update process works today, the pilot program will automatically update consumer Windows 8 and Windows RT machines for free to Windows 8.1 Update and Windows RT 8.1 Update in select markets.”

Microsoft testing Windows 8.1 upgrades for Windows 8 users

Microsoft is currently testing this new upgrade method with Windows RT users, and if proven successful will begin using the method on x86/64 based PC's too. This 'pilot program' will allow Microsoft to push Windows 8.1 via Windows Update, much like Windows 8.1 Update, that will install over Windows 8 easily and in the background.

Microsoft Works to Get Windows 8/RT Users Updated to 8.1

With continued reports that some Windows 8.0/RT 8.0 users continue to have trouble updating to 8.1, Microsoft this week released a new automatic update that appears to be aimed at mitigating this problem. It's being tested in select markets and could be more broadly rolled out soon.

The problem will be that for non-RT PCs, Microsoft changed the hardware requirements between 8.0 and 8.1 (for 64-bit, anyway)

This means that some older PC hardware which runs 64-bit Windows 8.0 can't run the equivalent 64-bit Windows 8.1; so an automatic update wouldn't work.

Also there is software (Microsoft Flight Simulator for instance) which doesn't work properly on 8.1.

How so? I have MS Flight Simulator 2004 and Flight Simulator X installed on my desktop PC and they work fine, Windows 8.1 Pro with update x64.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong then...
I've installed 8.1 Update from scratch from the ISO (I got one of the last Technet accounts), latest graphics drivers I can find, put FSX on it (with not much other software) and FSX still crashes every so often. It's a laptop, but a fairly recent one (it came with 8.0) and has 8GB and some sort of Intel i3 so it should have the power to run software that's a few years old now.

I sent you a PM with some info on the PC I'm running it on. I don't want to take this thread off topic.
