Windows 'Threshold': More on plan to win over Windows 7...

Windows "Threshold," the next major version of Microsoft's Windows operating system due to hit around the spring of 2015, is coming into focus.

And not too surprisingly, one of the Microsoft Operating Systems Group's main goals in designing and developing the coming operating system (OS) release -- which may or may not ultimately be branded as "Windows 9" -- is to try to make it more palatable to hold-out Windows 7 users.

In order to do this, Microsoft is working on including in Threshold lots of new features specifically aimed at "desktop" users, meaning those who interact primarily with their Windows computing device from a desktop or laptop PC with mouse/keyboard and optional touch.

With Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft officials designed Windows around a set of profiles based on the hardware specifications of the devices in use. Certain devices running Windows 8.1 Update include Power and Search buttons on the Metro-style Start screen; others don't. Some of those running Windows 8.1 Update have their machines start up by default in the Desktop/Win32 legacy environment, while others on touch/mobile-first devices start up in the Metro-Style Start Menu by default.

According to my sources, Microsoft will continue in this vein with Windows Threshold. The Threshold OS will look and work differently based on hardware type.

Thanks for posting this, Shawn.

Mary Jo's sources are usually reliable, so it looks as though I stand corrected in that the Desktop app will remain. Looks like the "7ers" are voting with their wallet and holding out. More time to develop more Modern/Metro apps in the mean time. Office suite also.

Meh, as long as the Start Screen remains intact, that's all I care about and will continue on deploying. It is a good idea though to have a start menu type UI for old xp and 7 users. Apparently ripping off the bandage too quickly to transition off to something totally new didn't sit to well with people especially when there wasn't any proper way of showing users how to ACTUALLY use Windows 8.

Speaking of numerology, in biblical numerology the number 8 represents the start of a new series.

Windows 8 introduced a radically new and different UI that carries over onto several platforms and effectively shaped the One Microsoft today.

It is a start of a new series indeed.

Speaking of Biblical numerology... 7 is God's number (how dare 9 [or even 8] try to best 7!) 12 is the number of the Son of God (aka Jesus, aka Pisces/Jesus' fish symbol is the 12th Zodiac sign). I believe that many things in life are "pre-ordained" sort to speak. As such, I predict Microsoft will return to its glory days again starting with Windows 12 (the Son-of-God Windows version)... This is b/c if you think 8 is bad, just watch the chaos that will ensue in X, XI... Meanwhile, 7 is/will be the best version (preceding XP), until 12 comes along...

Mary Jo says:
"The Desktop/laptop SKU of Threshold will include, as previously rumored, the Mini-Start menu — a new version of the traditional Microsoft Start menu, an early concept of which Microsoft showed off at the company's Build developers conference in April. It also will include the ability to run Metro-Style/Windows Store apps in windows on the Desktop. Will it turn off completely the Metro-Style Start screen with its live-tile interface, as Neowin is reporting, and make the tiled Start Menu a toggleable option from the Mini Start menu? I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised.
(Update: It's worth pointing out the Mini Start menu is expected to be customizable. Users will be able to include Metro-Style apps or remove all Metro Style apps/tiles from the menu so that only Desktop apps are included in the Mini Start menu — either as tiles or in list form)"

"Microsoft may opt to not make a big deal out of Windows 8.1 Update 2 and just push it out quietly as part of the set of August patches - August 12, Tuesday. There may be some UI adjustments and tweaks, but nothing hugely noticeable. Since Microsoft officials decided earlier this year to make the Mini Start Menu part of Threshold instead of Update 2, there's not a whole lot of new features of note coming in Update 2"

Hi there

Since installing Windows 8.1 I haven't seen any need apart from running ONE application (SAP GUI) to use Windows 7 any more. W7 looks increasingly dated each time I use it.

The latest update - windows 8.1 update 1 seems to have no trouble with the SAP GUI even though it's "not officially supported" yet by SAP - due to be so soon so bye bye W7.

Whether you need a traditional desktop or you want to use touch I can't see ANY problem with W8.1 update 1.

I just hope Ms don't go overboard with "Threshold" Running decent Metro apps from the desktop would be OK IF they were properly re-sizeable -- not in fixed 1/2, 1/4 etc screen sizes -- a huge waste on a large monitor. I'd also like these re-sizeable windows TO BE BORDERLESS -- no titles.

I'd also like OFFICE apps to be borderless too (but re-sizeable windows) -- with a right mouse click to access context menus etc.

Some small live tiles (aka Vista's gadgets) might also be nice. As to a start menu I really can't be bothered with that issue any more.

If Ms DO bring back a start menu I can see all sorts of people working on "Hiding it" or disabling it -- now that would be a turn round for the book. !!

I'm not sure I'd want to continually switch from desktop to metro mode either - that could be a bit irritating - even with a lightning fast machine. Set the basic environment either at install or at boot time but allow both modes of operation without having to completely re-load the environment.

Also isn't it about time to integrate the browser with the standard file explorer (you can use IE to browse local files anyway). Seems silly to have TWO programs which are essentially doing the same thing.

I'm still however using XP in a VM as I have some hardware that won't run on anything else and I can't replace very easily - so it looks like good old XP has outlasted my W7 system. !!

Cheers
jimbo

I don't miss, want or need the Start Menu. I will likely be one of those that disables it. The changes Microsoft made to the Start Screen fixed all my beefs I had with the original in 8.0. I'm now working on my fathers Windows 7 laptop and find the Start Menu cumbersome and frustrating. I wasn't expecting that as I liked and used Windows 7 for many years. It was and still is a great OS. It was weird how I could forget things I used to do every day so quick. It didn't last long but it made me chuckle in side while my father watched me struggle to find things.
If they make open Metro apps look more like running desktop programs that will work for me. Resizable windows instead of snap. The option to NOT auto hide the taskbar and the menu bar at the top would be nice too. The one thing I'd really like to see killed is the auto grouping of tiles on the Start menu. You should be able to use single columns if you want and leave empty spaces. Like you can with shortcuts on your desktop.

That's the first I've heard about being free to Windows 7 SP1 users. That will likely make some people happy. Those that paid to upgrade to 8.0 or 8.1 might be a bit peeved though.

Hi there

This is often the way to woo new customers -- same with Broadband -- when I come back for a short work stint in the UK I see all sorts of enticing Broadband offers like FREE Broadband for 6 months if you take Sky Sports or BT offering 6 months of broadband to new customers for 7 GBP / 9 EUR / 10 USD a month. The last time I signed up it was costing me nearly 65 GBP a month !!!

Same with Bank accounts and all sorts of other things -- the trick is to "Sucker you in" and then due to inertia you start paying the full price -- however canny customers now switch several times to keep these "deals" going !!!.

If you've got a Windows 7 ISO somewhere - when the time comes you might also be able to get a "Free upgrade" -- just keep watching out for offers etc. Even if you paid for your upgrade - there's no reason to NOT get a second copy -- useful for VM testing etc --remember by about October the last of the TechNet subscribtions will have expired so no more easily available ISO's for the majority -- MSDN is for most single / home users far too expensive as an alternative.

I'm hoping for a cheap W7===>W9 upgrade when W9 appears -- I'll re-install W7 on a machine and then go for the upgrade -- should be cheaper than a direct purchase !!!

Cheers
jimbo

My TechNet runs out next week I believe, I've still got my MSDN subscription so its not a big deal for me. I'll get new keys for 8.1 update 2/3 if they go that way anyway. 9 too when it comes out, so I'm covered. Did your TechNet run out yet Jimbo? It will be interesting to see if the keys get deactivated or black listed or what ever. You likely won't know until you reinstall and try reusing a key. That will be a gotcha for some people if they do it.

Mine runs out Oct 12

I've got all the keys and ISO's I need though -- I don't think they will run out in October -- People with expired / lapsed subscriptions are still using their products without problems.

If they do -- well I'm quite happy with Linux these days for most things (I'd miss Ms office though -- might be interesting to see if I can get it to work properly on WINE).

In the past your keys didn't get canceled but this is an actual termination of TechNet as a whole. I'd be surprised if they out right just blacklisted right away. It wouldn't surprise me though if some time down the road after so many activations/uses your key didn't work anymore. I've snagged all the keys I'll ever want on TechNet already. ISO's I can get on MSDN anyway. I've got all the current ones downloaded already anyway. If your good till October you'll likely be able to get the new Windows 8.1 update 2 or 3 keys that are rumored. Anyway its probably time to let this thread go back on track.

I'm thinking 9 (the ad-supported/basic version) will be free for 7 users, while 8 users get the 9 Pro version free...

In my opinion, the best one is:
"Windows Threshold is looking like it could be free to all Windows 8.1 Update, and maybe even Windows 7 Service Pack 1, users."

Oh boy....that's good news!

LOL.

It is clear vast numbers of consumers are staying away from 8x, because they do not like the online integration/metro rubbish.

Governments are also staying away , because they do not like the online integration/metro rubbish.

What is the problem with 8x, then?

MS next attempt will include the online/metro stuff but it will be more subtle, and anything they can think of to get consumers off win7. Including free "upgrade" offers, and a variety of attempts to make it difficult for consumers to get/use win7.

Be fascinating to see how they get on with these manipulation efforts.

I hear they are (allegedly) going to make metro go away in enterprise version. No such blessed relief on the horizon for consumers, though.

I seriously doubt 9 will be the panacea everyone expects. I suspect it will be heavy into promoting Bing and Microsoft's cloud services and try to rope consumers into a monthly subscription plan. It seems as though productivity is a mute cause with the company's profit only concept.

All I read about are cosmetic changes, nothing else substantial, the app store will not offer anything new.

If I have 7 and 8 why would I even need 9?
