Increase to OneDrive storage plans announced

OneDrive is free online storage I rely on every day to access all my photos, videos, Office documents, and other files anytime I want on any of my Windows devices. It’s built into Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. I use OneDrive to help protect my files if something happens to any of my devices. For example, on my Windows Phone my camera roll automatically saves any photos I take to OneDrive. And I also use OneDrive to collaborate with others. My fiancée and I have a shared OneNote notebook where we collaborate on wedding stuff.

Today, the OneDrive Team has announced increases to their OneDrive storage plans. OneDrive will now come with 15GB of free online storage - up from 7GB previously. For OneDrive’s paid plans if you need additional online storage, they are dropping storage prices by over 70%. And finally, all Office 365 subscriptions will come with 1TB of online storage. For all the details on the changes to OneDrive’s storage plans – see this blog post from Omar Shahine on the OneDrive Blog.

Seems like natural evolution to me. Remember the days when you were only allowed 10MB in your hotmail account? Outlook now lets you store messages up to 1.5GB!

I do have a thought of why they're doing this. Because Windows 8 and MS are bashed so much I'll keep it to myself.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have SO much OneDrive storage that I haven't fully utilized simply because of folder structure. I'd need to move my OneDrive folder on my system to my hard drives and then proceed to copy over 100+ gigs to make a redundant hard copy so it can all totally upload to OneDrive.

First world living would be much easier if there was the ability to right click or select files and folders from the file system, either Desktop or OneDrive app, and just upload that selected portion. No need to make redundant copies, no directories to relocate, just easier.

But no.

I don't find appeal in any of mainstream online storages due to lack of local folder synchronization with multiple devices. Dropbox is fine if you are working on small scale.

Do I understand correctly, if you have multiple Windows 8 installs running on the same Microsoft account, you still only get the basic free amount?

You could, I suppose, set up each system with a different account and get full free amount. I would think, however, such a setup would cause problems in syncing the systems. Also, you would not be able to share your purchased apps between systems.

I also understand Office 365 allows for up to four installs. Does each get 1 GB, or is that the total for all four?

Yes, I use the same Live ID on my 2 desktops and my 2 laptops and only get the basic 7 GB.

Doesn't seem fair since I pay the same for the second or third copy of Windows 8, that I should not get the use of the Free space. Maybe Microsoft should change the way that space is recognized and allow the space for each license on that same account....

It seems many folks are offering Cloud storage right now.... I suppose they are all trying to gain market share since something free does not make them much money.

I don't use any Cloud storage right now, except for iTunes :)

Right now its per account not per device. You could have more than one user on a device and they each have their own One Drive storage. I have 7 gigs and my wife has 7 gigs. On the plus side, if you buy an App you only have to buy it once, and can use it on multiple devices that you log on with that Live ID. It's tied to your Live ID, not the PC. It's not all bad.

Cocke Robot, Forcing you to make a copy of every file and folder you want to upload to One Drive is silly. But like this you have yet one more back up of your files (if it's on a separate physical drive).
Why not use your OneDrive folder as your normal document folder?
alkaufmann, MS should have localised servers otherwise it's a service which will be for US domestic use only. Because moving dozen of Gb eleswhere takes a lot of time.
