That only tells me W7 was up to everyone's standard with just one SP, unlike 8!

I can't get away from the idea that Microsoft is herding us toward a "Pay as you Go" type system much like they are using for Office 365 and Adobe uses for its software now. I suppose only time will tell.
8.1 is not a "new OS"... My original 8.0 key activates 8.1 without a problem (Using the Technet/MSDN 8.1 .ISO). Also, you can still buy stand-alone versions of Office if you want. 8.1 and beyond is the only update path for 8.0 (I never thought I might one day have to spell out this kind of thing...)

The tech press is really "something"...perpetually confused on the simplest of issues, it seems. This *better be* the update that integrates an official start menu into 8. Having paid $40 for the Pro version back in January '13 I can't really complain...but if Microsoft wants to sell a lot more of Win8 before shipping Win 9, the update had better be there!
Technically Windows 8.1 is a new OS. The kernel version no changed. it went from 6.2 to 6.3. Microsoft chose to let you use your 8.0 key to activate it, they didn't have to. Just because they use the same activation key doesn't mean they are the same OS. Granted, 8.1 doesn't look a whole lot different that 8.0.

Would have been nice if in PC info it would say Windows 8.1.1 instead of Windows 8.1

There is no Windows 8.1.1. People on this forum call it that but Microsoft doesn't.

All I hope for is that they fix all of the issues 8.1 introduced over 8.0

My WiFi drivers don't work properly, nor do my Bluetooth mice. Personally, I didn't see 8.1 or 8.1.1 as an improvement over 8.0, for me, it has caused nothing but headaches. My mouse still doesn't function properly. I have several 8 units but only updated 1 device until these driver problems are sorted out. Media center (that I paid extra for) still has numerous issues.

Drivers don't work because of their respective manufacturer's, not M$'s bugs (I hate to admit that). Manufacture's lazynes, downright uncaring attitude toward their customers or just plain "let them buy our newer products" is behind all that. M$ has Windows xxx Readiness tools that should be run before doing any upgrades.

I had WIFI issues after doing the Store Upgrade to 8.1. No such issues after doing a clean install of 8.1 though. Driver issues would be my guess.

When it worked in 8.0 and not in 8.1, I tend to think it is a Microsoft issue. With this next update will manufacturer's have to refit all their tools again? Will I have go through another session of discovering how to fix something all over again?

I think most software companies do fairly well at keeping up, it is Microsoft that keeps changing the rules. Microsoft products often fail their own updates.

Then the lesson we learn, is never do an update and simply do a clean install every time? Do I have to purchase a new version to do a clean install?

Windows 8.1 is a new operating system, even when compared to windows 8.0. It's an upgrade not an update. New operating system often means new drivers. Microsoft pre released 8.1 to the OEM's long before we got it as an update, so they could make their software compatible. It's not Microsoft fault if the manufacturer doesn't update their software.

The lesson we learn is upgrades have more of a chance of having issues over doing a clean install. If you do an upgrade install your bring all the excess baggage you've installed along with it. Non standard things done to customize your system can cause issues too. There is a lot more that can go wrong versus a clean install. Not everybody had issues, and not everybody had the same issues.
