Windows 8.1 Update 2 to arrive through the Windows Store

The rep claims that Update 2 will land in August/September of this year, and that it will be delivered through the Windows Store much like Windows 8. The rep also claims that Windows 8.1 Update 2 will be a hefty 3GB in size, making us believe that Update 2 won't be like Windows 8.1 Update 1, but more like Windows 8.1 as a whole compared to Windows 8. 3GB is somewhat a significant increase in size compared to Update 1, which maxed at around 700MB.

Windows 8.1 Update 2 to arrive through the Windows Store, and be 3GB in size? | WinBeta

hope it by windows update and not store

whatever, I hope that the damned thing is able to do like W8.1 update and be able to D/L the thing so I can make my ISO from it, otherwise I'll have to revert to another torrent d/l of the ISO like I had to with up1.

Where did the 3 GB file size come from? That's the first I've heard about it being that big? If true that's going to suck for those with a slow or metered Internet connection.

I was that guy (apologies to Sheldon Cooper).

That is what I was told by the rep yesterday, he could be winding me up and everyone else up but who knows. I am sure M$ will be listening to the recordings of the tapes and if someone said the truth they most likely will get fired if they span a huge yarn then its just news fodder to keep everyone interested. Anyhow he fixed my authorization issue.

Still trying to wrap my head around the 3 GB, that's some "update", sounds more like an OS upgrade. I guess its now time for the hurry up and wait phase, lol.

As per usual, eh ? Many years ago auto manufacturers would go great lengths to hide upcoming models to "surprise" others but it somehow "leaked" anyway. Seems like those "leaks" were always a way to "sniff out" the market first and that may be a good thing for everyone concerned.
Distinguishing "smoke" from "fire" is another story. (they both smell).

If you update today from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Update 1, I assume it's now available a 3GB (approx) download via the Store - because you can presumably do it in one step from 8 to 8.1.1 without updating via 8.1 (without update) first.

Presumably the same will eventually apply to 8.1 Update 2 - if you start from plain Windows 8, you'll presumably be able to do it in one step via the Store, and it will be 3GB, mainly because of all the gubbins to take 8.0 to 8.1

I'm guessing/hoping this is what they mean.

I reckon it's still likely there will be a more minor update for those with 8.1 already.

I agree. Store cannot differentiate what updates have already been applied and thus pushes the full package whereas should 8.1.2 update come via WU, it's size will be dependant on the updates already applied to 8.1.1 and thus a lot smaller.. IMHO (of course...:D)

Yes, to go from 8.0 to 8.1 with update(s) 3 gigs makes sense. I was initially thinking update 2 (by itself) may be 3 gigs. Not likely now that I've thought about it for a while. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programing.

The same type of rumors started concerning the Update to Windows 8.0. But they waited until October and released it as a New OS.

I can't get away from the idea that Microsoft is herding us toward a "Pay as you Go" type system much like they are using for Office 365 and Adobe uses for its software now. I suppose only time will tell.

Pay as you go works when the initial cost is very high. Adobe products are on the expensive side if you want to buy it outright. Not all can afford what they want for the software. Pay as you go is a way to get the use without the initial high cost.

I'm not sure pay as you go would work very well for Windows. Buying a PC would end up like buying a cell phone. Here's your new tablet sir, with your monthly subscription fees for Windows and office that comes to......

On the plus side any future OS upgrades "should" be free with your subscription. Assuming the hardware supports it.

Me personally, given the choice between 2 to 3 hundred dollars outright, and a monthly fee, I'll pay the 2 to 3 hundred dollars and be done with it.

This is of course true, but you are looking at it from the user's point of view. If Microsoft could set up a system which would basically allow them to extract the cost of an OS every three years, it would level out their cash flow. It would also eliminate folks using software for an extended period, as was happening with XP.

I'm not sure pay as you go would work very well for Windows. Buying a PC would end up like buying a cell phone. Here's your new tablet sir, with your monthly subscription fees for Windows and office that comes to......

If you needed a "subscription" with your system, the cost of that would be paying for future upgrades. But exactly how they would set that up, is pretty much an unknown, to us...

Me personally, given the choice between 2 to 3 hundred dollars outright, and a monthly fee, I'll pay the 2 to 3 hundred dollars and be done with it.
So you think you would be given a choice? I have been checking to see if I could actually buy Photoshop off the shelf... it doesn't appear to be readily available.

We recently reported that Windows 8.1 Update 2 would be 3GB, whilst that's correct, the update itself won't actually be 3GB. Update 1 was around 700MB, and that should be the same for Update 2. Of course, the 3GB references the full release of Windows 8.1 Update 2. Much like Update 1, Microsoft will release ISO's with Update 2 slip streamed.

More tidbits of Windows 8.1 Update 2 and Windows 9 information leaks | WinBeta

This part is interesting;

Windows 8.1 Update 2 is almost finished according to WZOR, and that Microsoft are currently discussing the ways in which they could offer it to existing users. Update 2 will require new license keys, and will offer it to Windows 8.0 users for a small fee. The update will be free for Windows 8.1 Update 1 users of course. The alternative method for Windows 8.0 users would be to update to Windows 8.1 for free, and then to Update 1 and then to Update 2.

EDIT: that very last part is going to suck (if true) for those with OEM 8.0 installs.

Even more good stuff, depending on how you look at it I guess.

The Start Menu was originally set to arrive with Update 2, but then was pulled for unknown reasons. Microsoft could be saving it for Windows 9 to make it more appealing for the Chinese government, and for marketing reasons too.
