Windows 8.1 Update 2 to arrive through the Windows Store

It'd be nicer if they released an .msi package for 8.1.2 like they did last time. The Windows Store updating is usually hit or miss. If you open the Store (which not everyone does on a regular basis) it might show of a new Windows update, it might not. This is probably why not everyone is on 8.1.

If Windows Update took care of this, everyone would get 8.1.2 in one fell swoop.

Actually the best thing ever that worked is a service pack, download, install, end of story, no guess no mess. Sits on a MS server and on countless mirrors they have already, even universities or file depositories. You don't have to wait by during that time practically useless computer while it downloads and installs and is much less subject to interruptions or hit and miss.

Yes the good ole days of SP's and slipsteaming.
What concerns me a bit, is that the official ISO's will most likely only be downloaded (via Setupbox ) with a new key... hopefully the switch trick will still work tho'.

    Service packs are quite pass.

It seemed like Update 1 was basically operated in such a service pack manner. Main difference is that the build string of Windows doesn't get changed to reflect any "real" changes.

According to original rumor Update 2 will be through Microsoft Update and only a full ISO version of Windows 8.1 Update 2 will be on the Store for new installs. Lots of miss-quotes on all these Blogs.

If it comes though the Windows Store I bet its and upgrade install to from 8.1 with update 1 to Windows 8.2. Like going from 8.0 to 8.1 via the store. A kernel version change.
It comes via Windows update then its likely just the update 2 by itself. No kernel version change like update 1 was. That's my theory anyway.

Instead of an IT specialist I'm now employing a full time psychic to keep track of all the new updates/upgrades/new kernels/new OSs/ ... yadda, yadda, yadda!

Good luck (they'll need it), now imagine doing that for Linux. Ghost busters would have trouble.

When it worked in 8.0 and not in 8.1, I tend to think it is a Microsoft issue. With this next update will manufacturer's have to refit all their tools again? Will I have go through another session of discovering how to fix something all over again?

I think most software companies do fairly well at keeping up, it is Microsoft that keeps changing the rules. Microsoft products often fail their own updates.

Windows 8.1 is a new operating system, even when compared to windows 8.0. It's an upgrade not an update. New operating system often means new drivers. Microsoft pre released 8.1 to the OEM's long before we got it as an update, so they could make their software compatible. It's not Microsoft fault if the manufacturer doesn't update their software.
Excellent point and my main beef with Creative for example. It's not like 8.1 was a total surprise that just dropped out of thin air.

Creative seems to be one of the worst offenders in terms of updating drivers. They aren't alone but I've heard that same complaint about them may times in the past. It's a shame really they were one of the top dogs at one point.
