Windows 8.1 consumers: It's time to move to Update 1

Today, June 10, is Microsoft Patch Tuesday. It's also the deadline for consumers running Windows 8.1 to install the Windows 8.1 Update if they want to continue to receive patches and fixes from Microsoft.

Microsoft originally imposed a deadline of May 13 on consumer users to move to the Windows 8.1 Update. On May 12, Microsoft announced a deadline extension to June 10.

From the article

Users who are on Windows 8, not Windows 8.1, are not subject to the requirement to move to Windows 8.1 Update by June 10. (Microsoft has set January 2016 as the end support date for Windows 8 users who haven't moved to 8.1.)

I've seen some confusion about when the cutoff date for 8.0 updates was. Some thought it was June 10th like it was for 8.1, not so. It looks like you've got until January 2016 before you have to move on to Windows 8.1, or another supported OS.

I'm already running Windows 8.1 Update on all my PC's so it's not an issue for me.

That's too bad. So, users won't get any other updates for free if they don't do this now?

So if they give 9 at a discount for those of us who've updated, the ones that didn't get in on the update get to pay full price of 9?
Sounds good to me!

If you undo some of the "tweaks" you did to your system it might install. I'm not trying to be a smart @ss, just saying. Then tweak things back the way you want it.

I haven't had any issues after installing it on several PC's, one was even running the leaked version. I did had one desktop PC that it wouldn't install on though. I didn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out why. I was wanting to clean install on a PC anyway so that became the one I tested on. It's also running fine with 8.1 update.

Makes you wonder when they will stop support for Vista/Windows 7 if they are going to stop supporting Windows 8 specifically.

Either way though if you think about it from another standpoint these new operating systems are popping out just like cell phones/video cards. I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in late 2014/early to mid 2015 a new Windows OS comes out. I have read elsewhere that some rumors was that there would be a Windows 8.2 update and then a Windows 9 OS but nothing is verified from what I understand.

restore factory settings

ive just restored factory settings (OEM 8.0) install
now when i ran the first tranche of updates 109 of them,
system got to error message installation failed reverting changes,
2/3 hours later finally reverted, ran WU troubleshooter and it fixed log corruptions wondering if this is part of MS's plan to move everybody up.
Still working my way up to 8.1, SO WILL I GET ANY UPDATES???

Was going to try by only running KB 2919355 not in the list AAAAAHH.

Roy

KB2919442 is required prior to 2919355, you can directly DL but they fail

You need to be already be running 8.1 to apply update 1(kb2919355) You upgrade to Windows 8.1 though the Windows Store. I do believe the Store Upgrade to 8.1 now includes update 1.

In any case you'll have to do the upgrade. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/32995-windows-8-1-update-windows-8-a.html?filter .

If you are set to autoupdate it should be, just in case check what updates you have installed and maybe try to force looking for updates.

Hi there

2020 for W7 expiration -- I'll be LONG retired by then -

I doubt though if I'd still be using W7 by then --- probably though I'll STILL be using XP !!! -- I recut / make Vinyl's for order ill -- a great hobby even in retirement from Engineering / computers and quite profitable -- and my cutting software only works on XP !!! -- I neither need nor want to buy the new expensive stuff -- not worth it for me in the volume I make.

Cheers
jimbo
