If the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is ‘Feature Complete’....

If the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is ‘Feature Complete’ Where are the Missing Features?

When Microsoft released the Windows 8 Consumer preview recently they described it as “feature complete”, which came as no surprise to anyone. The Windows 7 beta was also feature complete and indeed “feature locked”. Between the release of the beta in January 2009 and the final product that October absolutely nothing changed.

This won’t be the same for Windows 8 however where several features within the operating system are either unfinished or simply missing completely. One indication that this might happen was shortly after the Developer Preview was released which was missing Windows Media Centre, a perhaps little used feature that’s crucially important to those people, including myself, who do actually use it. I for instance have had a Media Centre PC as my main means of receiving and recording live TV in my living room since 2003.

If the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is 'Feature Complete' Where are the Missing Features?

I was kind of disappointed to not see Windows To Go installed. I guess I have to go my traditional route of trying to make a Windows 8 flashdrive...

This paragraph from the link is so true, the part in bold is a good reason to change to Windows 8.

Windows 8 is very different to the Windows 7 in that is certainly not “feature locked”. Despite being based on the already very stable Windows 7 code-base it is actually quite unstable at times with certain software elements prone to crashing. This will no doubt be the fault of the new WinRT run-time engine powering Metro which may also be unfinished.

That paragraph doesn't say, what you think it does (unless you were being sarcastic, or made a typo).

It actually says W8 crashes a lot and the author is blaming WinRT.

Ya gotta love these "reviewers" and "experts" that can't seem to make a system stable.

This 8 beta is 100% stable imho. Not a fraction less.

If it is crashing or doing this that and/or the other thing, the issue is not with the actual OS. It's in the drivers or user error.

That's not an OS issue. It is the driver manufacturer's issue.

Did you install by pointing at the .inf using the device manager? It will install fine like that.

CP problem

I've tried using:

  • "Device Manager" (automatic install).
  • "Device Manager" (manual install).
  • The MB driver CD (exe).
  • A new download from the manufacturer.
  • "Compatibility Mode".

I've also tried various combinations of the steps listed above.

It will install the driver, but it only outputs buzzing noises.
Since XP, W7 and W8 DP install it and it works properly, it is a W8 CP (64 bit) problem (all use the same MB).

I haven't tried installing W8 CP (32 bit) to see if it works in that version.

Even if it does not work on 8 CP x64, it still is not an OS problem. Like I said, that's the driver manufacturer's problem.

I can likely help you out if you provide the hardware id of the audio device. In device manager, you can right click it, choose properties then go to details tab. Change the dropdown to say hardware ids. Copy/paste the results here.

No, from Win 7 is fine as you did.

Reboot to 8. Download/extract this to a folder. Open device manager.

Right click on the audio line needing driver. Update driver software | browse my computer | let me pick | have disk | browse

Now point to this file in the extracted folder: viahdb2.inf

Should work fine.

When done, you can run the .exe file from VIA's website if you want to install the utilities too.

What happened to the licensing model?

I was kind of disappointed to not see Windows To Go installed. I guess I have to go my traditional route of trying to make a Windows 8 flashdrive...
Yeah, at least they will let enterprises do such. I'm not too sure about everyday folk, but if it's there, I guess so.

But to me, I think that would be a splendid business model to sell maybe, 64 gig USB 3.0 SSDs with Windows 8 installed. It's just like selling a multiuse license. Of course, that would come at a higher price, but still...

I'm actually going to attempt this Windows To Go thing this week. I found out that you have the use this automated installer software and you need this file from the installer disk of Windows 8. I already know that a 32 bit copy of Windows will gladly occupy an 8 gig space, and I have me a 16 gig flash drive that has 14.2 gigs of space that is carrying a useable Windows 7, it's time to Start the Future, of Windows. Aw yeah!

Thanks GMan. :D

I'll have to recreate my VHD first.
I deleted W8 CP when I was going to try to "Upgrade" W8 DP (since the sound driver was working in DP).
I didn't know that you couldn't upgrade VHD installs.
Since I couldn't make the sound work correctly, I didn't bother recreating W8 CP.

I'll report back later on the results.

Closer, but ...

No luck.
That file (viahdb2.inf) made W8 CP (64 bit) instantly BSOD.

Try this one then. I'm not too familiar with VIA drivers....I *think* this should do the trick, especially since that one didn't.

Use viahdb2.inf, same as before:

OK that one installed, but the result is the same as with my drivers (i.e. I get buzzing noises instead of sounds).

Thanks though. :)

Sure, you're welcome. These kind of things I am not satisfied with hearing....meaning....I HAD to try for you anyhow because I really don't know technically why it is not working.

Kinda like a puzzle heh heh. If I had your machine, I'd be trying everything under the sun.

In any case, perhaps you should send an e-mail over to VIA with a link to here or whatnot. With such a large company and obviously available talent, they may scrap together some beta driver in an instant.

Weird....but in any case...best of luck!

In my thinking, there may be a very small chance of some other driver doing something weird. Perhaps compare the versions you have installed to your other working OSes. You could even try booting to "good" Vista/7/8 OS. Then copy the .sys, the .inf and the .cat from that OS' directories directly over the ones to the non-working 8 directories. Reboot to "bad" 8 and see what happens.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers - .sys
C:\Windows\inf - .inf
C:\Windows\System32 - .cat

Exactly - pretty sure it is for Enterprise licenses - the average Joe won't be getting that.

Are MS really going to let everyone carry round a portable version of windows 8?

Aw yeah!

Tried that too

Again, thanks for trying to hep me. :)

I thought of that (W8 DP to W8 CP) but Windows won't allow me to copy the drivers directory.
It says that it's copying the directory, but when you open the copy, it only has about 6 files in it!

Since I used VHDs for W8, I can't even use the "brute force approach" to do it (i.e. fire up Linux and copy the files).

I don't know what the driver files names are.
If I did, I could try copying them individually (from W7 or W8 DP).
Since I have a real W7 install, I can always use Linux to retrieve them, if W7 "won't play ball".

I've also tried:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Checking the ISO Sha 1 hash
  • Re-installing W8 (3x)

None of those steps made any difference.

That's why I think that it's an OS "fault".
MS must have changed something between the W8 DP and W8 CP.
