Microsoft's Surface strategy: As long as it takes

And now for something completely contradictory....

It’s important to mention that our data is collected from almost 800 apps in the Windows Store and it’s safe to assume that these apps are used more on the tablets (and especially Windows RT tablets) than on traditional PCs and laptops, so the data is skewed towards tablet and touchscreen PCs. Having said that, it should provide a good overview of the ecosystem as a whole and specifically for developers building Windows Store apps.

All your points are valid. Couldn’t agree more, however, let’s talk advertising. Don’t know about the rest of the world, but here in the U.S. most people here live in some kind of a Hollywood TV/Movie lala land, especially when it comes to commercial advertisement (and politics). Not all, but a majority have subliminal psychological messages in them aimed generally at the younger. It’s quite amusing. Mostly > “You’re nobody until you get this > You just got to have it to fit in! > You’re going to be popular when you get it!” Generally all aimed to start a fad. > MS’ Surface commercials of “Click, click, click, dance and jump around, click, click, click!” is one of them. It’s “cool” to have one. A “catchy jingle” approach to brain burn.

Don’t get me wrong. I was young once and bought some unneeded items I probably should have scaled down such as my black-stripes-over-red 1970 Chevelle SS 396 w/ cowl induction, four on the floor, and posi-traction. But, hey > One doesn’t get the girls looking when one has a four-door Ford sedan which was my first car.

A classic that hurled Apple forward was their “1984” Super Bowl commercial. Apple 1984 Super Bowl Commercial Introducing Macintosh Computer (HD) - YouTube

That's ok. The RT is a moped next to the Pro.

Hey! Good luck in the playoffs. It just may end up you HABS and the Hawks. Not as big a hockey fan as you, but I do live very close to the Windy City.

Deosn't seem like we're gonna make it past the Rangers, who are now up 2 games to none.

Fear not! We've seen so many come back before. The Hawks were early on. They could be winning a game 3-0 in the last period and lose in overtime. They didn't know how to close out a game. Not sure if they still do!

After watching the press event today, the new Surface Pro 3 seems like a rather nice piece of hardware.

You have to spend money to make money.

The same can be said of the Xbox. It doesn't make a ton of money, but would that have been worth not having the title of best selling console for two years straight, largest console market share, and miss out on being a huge cultural phenomenon? I would doubt that.

The Surface tablets are no different. They are the exceptional stage for everything Microsoft brought to the surface and there is yet to be a tablet out there that can really rival them in every category. Would the whole scope of Microsoft's ambitions be better left to OEMs to screw up and clutter with useless anti-virus software that doesn't work?

I tried to explain this to a group of whippersnappers (a few years ago) and they refused to accept it.

Their position was, "Advertising exists for the consumer's benefit."
